STAR WARS: The Acolyte Wayseeker – A Book Review

Published:

The time in Star Wars before Skywalker was a galaxy known name, it was the era of the High Republic. While many have been reading stories about this time for years, the masses were just introduced to this time with the Disney+ series, The Acolyte. A simple mention of this show to any Star Wars fan, can possibly unleash a spew of opinions and chaos. While, it wasn’t my favorite Star Wars series (Obi-Wan Kenobi has that spot), it had some fantastic scenes and fights, and brought light to a time most Star Wars fans were unfamiliar with.

As a late Star Wars bloomer, one thing I have learned, is the deeper I dive, the more I fall in love. So, why not read a book with characters, for a Star Wars show I will inevitably rewatch. Once I know a character better, the rewatch usually seems like an upgrade.

The Story STAR WARS: The Acolyte Wayseeker

This book stars two familiar faces from the show. Vernestra Rwoh (who was played by Rebecca Henderson), and Indara (played by Carrie-Ann Moss). It takes place before the events of The Acolyte series, and after the Nihil conflict. Indara is a Jedi Master, but after a traumatic event she hides herself in the Jedi archives, until asked to go retrieve Vernestra. Vernestra is an older Jedi who has been wayseeking for years, and not responding to Jedi messages, for good reason.

The unlikely duo stumble upon a weapon designed to stop the Jedi, by rendering a lightsaber useless. This assignment to pick someone up, turns into a mission to find who is making this weapon, and how. We learn more about each character, including Vernestra’s hidden talent in the force that guides many of her decisions. We also see trust build, backstories unfold, and we learn the galaxy is not just light and dark.

Overall Grade: 7.5/10

I’m a sucker for a good story where the good guy and the bad guy are not always so clearly defined. In the original trilogy the line between light and dark seems to be so clearly defined. However, the more we dive into this galaxy far far away, the more that line is blurred. In STAR WARS: The Acolyte Wayseeker, they regularly emphasize, that not everyone loves the Jedi, and for good reason. While Vernestra and Indara are both struggling to find their place in the Jedi and the galaxy, they both see that line blur themselves. Yet their mission remains clear.

All in all, if you’re a fan of the High Republic era, or want to be, this is a fantastic book to pick up. At less than 300 pages it’s a quick read that dives further into these characters, as well as how the Jedi are perceived by others. While the main objective is to find out who is making these anti-jedi weapons, there are so many more layers to unfold. Spice addicts, pirates, politics, and more. We also get a connection to the Skywalker saga with a little green friend, but not the one you may expect.
