The Story
Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly bring Kamala to another pit stop in her epic journey of the X-Men’s history, and it’s one of the most rich stories to ever involve the X-Men, House of M. In a world where the mutants run the show, and the humans are looked down upon, Kamala can’t believe her eyes when she sees this new world order. Getting a good dose of this reality, she’s flabbergasted when she sees a couple of mutants bullying a human for being just that, a human. Not one to look the other way when faced with bigotry, Kamala puts her foot down and scares off the mutants.

Despite Kamala’s act of kindness, the human says she didn’t need her help and that they’ll bully her even more because of this. She says every time her teacher, Ms. Pryde, tells them to stop, it makes it even worse. Kamala caught her teacher’s name and excitedly realized that this is the Kitty Pryde, the X-Men, and probably the only one that can help Kamala.
When Kamala finds her, she’s surprised to learn that Kitty has no idea what she’s talking about. Fortunately for Kamala, right at that moment they’re visited by none other than Wolverine and Layla Miller who say no one remembers what Kamal is talking about, but they’re able to help. Layla gives Kitty all the memories of her life prior to this mutant takeover. Wolverine then invites Ms. Marvel and Kitty to join them on their way to Genosha to kill the Scarlet Witch once and for all.
The Writing
I love the retelling of these stories from Kamala’s perspective, so I was very interested in seeing how House of M would be handled. There was a large cloud of emotion over the whole comic, understandably so. When you see young mutants losing their powers with their emotions all over the place, it’s hard not to feel bad along with them. Especially when you have Kitty Pryde feeling every bit of emotion through all of her returned memories. I think the writers did a great job showing the emotional discourse of the House of M, and I’m interested to see the conclusion of this story in the next issue, Giant-Size X-Men #2.
Along with the main story, we also get a secondary story that has to do with Wolverine, and what he experienced at the end of House of M. With all of his memories flooding back to him, Wolverine has unfinished business to take care of that’s been put off for decades.
The Art
Francesco Manna and Edgar Delgado are the artists of A Sweet and Perfect World, the main story of Giant-Size House of M #1. What I really enjoyed from Manna was the amount of detail that went into every expression of the characters. With this factor of depth, it really added to the emotion of the comic coming from the characters. Pairing that with Delgado’s excellent use of vibrant colors, particularly when dealing with Legion, it made the comic hook you into to each page.
Final Thoughts
I enjoyed Giant-Size House of M #1 very much, and I am really looking forward to see how this event is concluded in the next issue, Giant-Size X-Men #2. Seeing all of the X-Men events I’ve read for years through a new perspective has been quite a joy.
