The Writing and Story
Continuing her journey through the incredible past events of the X-Men, Kamala finds herself in the worst of situations. She’s stuck in the Age of Apocalypse and it’s only a few hours until disaster hits, which is terrifying. Kamala has to find what’s left of the X-Men, along with Legion by her side, if she wants to have a ghost of a chance at survival.
With all the action that comes with the Age of Apocalypse storyline, there were was a really sweet moment between Rogue and Kamala. Kamala struggles with being a mutant, and it has an impact on her powers. Rogue lends a helping hand and comforting words for her new time traveling friend, and it makes a huge difference for Kamala.
Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly bring another storyline we all know and love but give us the opportunity to watch it from a different perspective, Kamala’s. I’ve really been enjoying this run for that reason, seeing these events differently. Lanzing and Kelly have been consistent in the quality of this run and that trend continues with the third installment. Additionally, you also get to read A Wrinkle in Time at the end of this comic, which is a prelude to Age of Apocalypse. It’s a compelling quick read that promotes the incoming X-Men of Apocalypse #1 coming in September.
The Art
C.F. Villa and Rafael Loureiro are the artists of Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1 and they used so much of their talent in the comic. There’s so many incredible panels throughout the comic, it’s hard to pick one to focus on. Joining the artists, Edgar Delgado brings his coloring expertise making the pages even more dynamic than they already were.
Final Thoughts
Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1 was astounding, and makes me so very excited for the next installment, Giant-Size House of M #1.
