Welcome to the Badlands

In a future that has been ravaged by chaos, disease, and death with the coming of the Cinder. A savior named Bataar is credited with saving what is left in existence in the world. The people here are mostly scavengers and nomads just trying to survive and get by. One of these people is Loloi who ones a food truck that specializes in noodles. It was a peaceful day, when out of nowhere the armed robot security force shows up looking for a stranger.

The stranger in question is a mysterious man who just wants to enjoy his noodles for lunch. He has a robot sidekick that hangs out on his shoulder, and who tries to be a voice of reason for the stranger. We soon find out why he needs reason as the security force knocks his noodles to the ground, so the stranger gets angry and destroys them with great power and fierceness. During the incident we find out the stranger goes by Ash.

After the incident the companion hitches a ride with his companion with Loloi to the next time. As the road is blocked, we learn just how strong Ash is as he easily unblocks the road. We discover his sidekicks name is Jiminy and not only is he his voice of reason, but he also can control Ash’s temper by putting him to sleep. The group has no time to relax, as someone has found out that Ash exists and is now hunting him.

The Journey Begins

This first issue does an incredible job of introducing us to our main characters, well at the same time keeping a mysterious aura about them. Ludo Lullabi has crafted an interesting story, that feels familiar well being completely its own thing. The hellscape of a world welcomes that grimy dystopian feel, where danger is around every corner. Mix that with a volatile main character whose anger gets the best of him, and it’s a recipe for sur success.

The art in this book is awesome and brings the world to life on the page. Ludo Lullabi gives great detail to the dystopian world, showing just how hopeless it truly is. At the same time the character designs are fantastic and give each character their own distinct look. Adriano Lucas compliments the art perfectly with his colors, which make every panel stand out.
