The Story
Minding their own business while walking in the park, the newest X-Men recruits, Bronze, Axo, and Melee, happen upon something suspicious, to say the least. Some kind of glowing vine, that Melee names a “space swirley”, is sitting on a park bench. Axo wants to call Kitty or Emma to help with this, but he seems to be the only one in favor of that. Just as Melee tells him to stop being a baby, the space swirley expands into some kind of portal, and a large fist bursts out and grabs Bronze.
Finding out the fist belongs to Tank, the young X-Men are ready to fight, but another unexpected visitor shows up to lend a helping hand. Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart, soars in to help the X-Men fight him off, as this isn’t her first rodeo with Tank.

Ironheart and the X-Men battle the giant until he disappears into the glowing space swirl, furthering everyone’s confusion about the strange specimen. Riri runs her diagnostics using her A.I., N.A.T.A.L.I.E. and the X-Men run off to very important meeting, leaving Riri with the swirl. Still unsure of what exactly the swirl is, Riri heads back to her lab to find out more. She leaves the swirl behind, but that may have been a mistake, especially since the swirl proves to be dangerous when someone finds themselves trapped inside its portal.
The Writing
Eve L. Ewing, the writer of Exceptional X-Men, continues her work with the young mutants in the 11th installment, and shows how much they’ve learned as X-Men. She also shows that Kitty just isn’t ready for the young mutants to grow and become independent from their mentors.
What I loved the most about this comic is the inclusion of Ironheart. Ewing has written Riri Williams comics before, and I think including her in this storyline is a fantastic idea, especially after Marvel Studios just dropped Riri’s show onto Disney+ a couple of weeks ago. At this point, I’ll take all the Riri Williams I can get.
The Art
Federica Mancin is the artist of Exceptional X-Men #11 and brings so much heat to the comic. With a perfect amount of details, Mancin makes each page as exciting as the story. Joining Mancin is Nolan Woodard, who has been the colorsit for this run, and he continues to impress. Matched with Travis Lanham, all three artists make Exceptional X-Men #11 an exciting read.
Final Thoughts
I love that Eve L. Ewing brought in Ironheart into the story. I would love to see Riri continue to be helpful to the young mutants, and maybe a friendship forms with them.
Overall Grade – 8.4/10
