Death of the Silver Surfer Rides a Hero’s Wave

Silver Surfer is on a mission to be a hero of the people. He genuinely wants to aid humanity and make amends for the atrocities he’s committed in the name of Galactus. But we know what humanity is really about. In issue #1 they are ungrateful for he’s ending of a war. In this issue they treat him like a criminal for helping children. No matter what good he tries to accomplish, he’s seen as an alien hostile.

In Case You Missed It: Death of the Silver Surfer #1 The Value of Life

Just when you thought humans couldn’t get any worse, they engage in a brutal mission to capture Skaar! But wait there’s more! Holland and B.A.N. travel to the corpse of Galactus in an attempt to steal his cosmic energy, only to spark life into the terrifying being! Humans aren’t really getting the best of lights shown up one them…except for Kelly Koh’s super wholesome Mom!

Is Humanity Doomed in Death of the Silver Surfer?

Issue 2 of Death of Silver Surfer kind of takes a harsh turn on humanity. They weren’t the most dependable people in issue 1, but here, even the kids that Surfer was showing kindness too curse him and throw apples. It comes of a little boundless at times. That’s not to say that there aren’t any exceptions. Kelly’s mother continues to be a sweet, wholesome understanding mother that I hope will ultimately weigh Kelly’s heart in the right direction.

Character Drive the Story

Speaking of Kelly Koh, she isn’t pulling any punches. In her previous run in with the Surfer, she was basically embarrassed and left to lick her wounds. Now she’s gearing up for a go at capturing Skaar. This one goes more in her favor, even with Surfer’s intervention. She’s doing the right thing in her mind and she’s a tough cookie to crumble.

Then there’s the slimy villain Holland. This guy exudes everything you hate in an 80’s movie villain. He has no regard for life or rules of nature in his quest for power and dominance. It makes it worse that he’s a weasley guy with no strength or skills.

“SUPERMAN” – A HEROIC JOURNEY SOARS TO NEW HOPEFUL HEIGHTS

The story itself is developing nicely. Surfer basically wants to be what we would think of as Superman. Kind, wholesome, caring, and good to his core. He’s out to protect life and bring peace to the planet. He’s learning the hard way how hard that is. On the other side, we have Kelly Koh going about her job as she was trained. She’s rough around the edges and stubborn as can be. She thinks she’s doing the right thing for humanity while the people she works for are really just seeking power…but to what end?

The Art Rules in Death of the Silver Surfer

The artwork for Death of the Silver Surfer has been top notch from the beginning. Sumit Kumar and Frank D’Armata make everything looks and feel larger than life. Panel layouts make for an engaging reading process and the action is amazing! When you think about a page turner, this is it. The images of Galactus floating through space like a mummy, Skaar battling and changing forms, and the Surfer showing pain and power are all phenomenal. The color palettes that aid these scene changes act as beautiful transitions. It’s a total package of art and lettering that embodies the story and enhances it.

Overall Grade 9/10

A visual display of power! I’ve seen a lot of comments on the art for this run and I agree, it’s fantastic! Issue 2 brings intense action, intriguing character moments, and some big terrifying images. The Silver Surfers plight to do good in the face of ungrateful people is a familiar theme, but a good transition into what will be coming when Galactus awakens. I’m loving Kelly Koh’s journey and I’m even more curious as to the endgame of B.A.N.
