Superman Easter Eggs Explained!

The long-awaited debut of James Gunn and Superman in the new world of DC is here! If you’re like me, then you probably were caught up in the awe-inspiring story to notice some of the subtle hints that Gunn left the audience. Well, fear not, we’ve got you covered, as there are quite a few you may have missed.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Starting with the Superman robots we see taking care of the Fortress of Solitude, they are a throwback to the robots that appeared in All-Star Superman.

Long-time fans of shows set in the Arrowverse or comics may have noticed the shoutout to a famous coffee shop by the name of Jitters! Yes, it is good to know Jitters exists even in Gunn’s universe.

Early in the film, there was a billboard that showcased another high-profile fast food establishment known as Big Belly Burger, which has long been featured prominently in both comics and shows.

The start of the film referenced Gods and Monsters, which is the working title for this first act of the new DC Universe.

Luthorcorp is the title on Lex’s fancy Metropolis building which is a nod to the Smallville series.

Ultraman is the name of the founder of The Crime Syndicate in the animated film Justice League: Crisis on Two Earth’s which is loosely based on the 2000 Grant Morrison comic book run. Ultraman in the story rivals Superman, otherwise known as evil Superman.

Nightwing’s favorite soda, Zesti Cola, makes an appearance on a billboard in the Justice Gang and Superman’s fight against the giant Kaiju.

Choco’s is a cookie known infamously as Martian Manhunter’s favorite snack which he can often be found enjoying when not saving the planet.

Sapphire Stagg is the wife of Metamorpho in the comic books, which, while unnamed in the scene where Rex is sitting next to a blonde woman on the couch, could be a nod to his comic origins.

During evacuations due to an interdimensional rift, the camera pans across two signs, one of which says Gotham City. With Lois’s plate being Delaware, we can assume Metropolis may not be far away from DC’s home of the Bat, which is located in New Jersey, otherwise known as Gotham.

Christopher Reeve’s son, Will, makes a cameo as a reporter on the ground in the film.

The opening and ending credits are a direct reference to those seen in 1978’s Superman film.
