The Story
What can you expect from a story that involves Superman, Batman, AND Weird Al? A super weird and super good time, and that’s exactly what you get with Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World’s Weirdest #1! In the DC Universe, things are going about business as usual. Citizens are working like normal, people are following their usual schedule, and Batman and Superman are taking on the Joker and Lex Luthor. Like I said, business as usual. That is until something horrible starts to take place. The world starts to become uniform and gray, with all the excitement in life disappearing. Superheroes are losing their powers and becoming average citizens, like Green Lantern becoming a traffic cop or Zatanna becoming nothing more than a birthday party magician. Something is taking all the craziness out of the world and leaving a mundane and bleak life behind.
Everyone in the world is affected, except one man. This man is already on the run from the police as they take issue with his vibrant clothing and his long, luscious hair. That man is Weird Al Yankovic.
This is what comics are meant to be. Really fun, a lot of weirdness, and a great time. Mark Waid and Tyrone Finch wrote this comic, and you could see they had fun with it. Alongside the craziness of the story, there’s a beautiful message that rings loudly; it’s okay to be weird. Being called weird is a badge of honor, not something to be ashamed of. This was handled beautifully by the writers and, of course, the person responsible for the vibes, Weird Al himself.
The Art
The artists perfectly captured the vast differences in the world, lacking the craziness and the world of Weird Al. In the world that lacked color and excitement, everything was purely uniform. Not a bit of thrill as far as the eye can see. And then there’s the world with the craziness that is a kaleidoscope of colors everywhere you look, with aspects only the silliest parts of your mind can create. Dan Schoening and Fico Ossio brought so much beauty and excitement to the pages of Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World’s Weirdest!
Steve Wands handled the lettering and did a fantastic job of nailing the varying tones throughout the comic. With some excellent use of sound effects, Wands allows the reader to experience reading the comic at an even more exciting level.
Final Thoughts
This comic was pure fun through and through! This is what I love about comics! The excitement, the good time, and the absolute weirdness. This was an excellent job done all around by the creative team!
