Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #5 – A Different Perspective

Published:

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the 5th issue Star Wars: Legacy of Vader from Marvel Comics!

Kylo Ren is on a journey to learn more about his grandfather Darth Vader, and thus far it’s lead him to Tatooine & Naboo. With the latter now being firmly in the sights of The First Order. So what will happen now? Let’s jump into it!

Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #5 by Charles Soule (Writer), Stefano Raffaele (Artist), Nolan Woodard (Color Artist), Joe Caramagna (Letterer) is a really different issue that didn’t go at all like I thought it would!

The Story

Charles Soule continues to impress me with how good his storytelling is! In the last issue we saw Kylo Ren dig into the backstory between his grandparents (Anakin & Padme), and he’s still there when the story starts. And I can’t undersell how good this story is.

Charles really shows Kylo in a different light in this issue, and set’s up the next issue incredibly! Sure, he’s still the same hardheaded, fly off the handle, Dark Side follower we all know & love. But we really get to see him be subtle and not so impulsive. It’s easily the most unique perspective we’ve seen Kylo presented in, in quite some time. I also liked the bit of dialogue giving us a peak into what the galaxy was thinking in-between The Last Jedi & The Rise of Skywalker. It’s not something we got to see much at all as of this writing, so I really appreciated the peak behind the curtain as it were.

The Artwork

Stefano Raffaele & Nolan Woodard are incredible in their craft in this issue. Stefano does an incredible job capturing the likeness of the characters & locations we’ve seen on the big screen. And the colors used by Nolan Woodard really do a good job portraying just how hopeless things seem. It is between episodes 8 & 9 of the films, so things are pretty bleak right now and the colors show that.

FINAL POINT: Charles Soule continues to cement his place atop the pyramid of Star Wars storytellers, and this unique perspective just adds to his legacy. Together with the amazing artwork from Raffaele & Woodard this issue (and the series overall) is one you don’t want to skip reading this week!

Overall Grade: 9.5/10
