The Story and Writing

Kwannon is still being haunted but now she knows it’s a ghost from her past, her childhood best friend named Mitsuki. No one knows about the haunting except for Kwannon, so she tries to deal with this problem herself. The only option she can think of is to return to the place she called home. It is the place that taught her to become the ninja she is today & the place that’s responsible for so much of her trauma. With the terrifying Mitsuki by her side, Kwannon makes her way to Kyoto, Japan to return to Master Hayashi’s home where he trained her.

During this journey, we get to see more of the supportive friendship Kwannon had with Mitsuki as a child and the traumatizing upbringing she experienced with Master Hayashi. The flashbacks to Kwannon’s childhood gives the story so much depth. I love how Alyssa Wong is handling Kwannon and her trauma, especially during this haunting. We’re also left with Kwannon running into someone I was extremely surprised about, so I’m interested to see where Wong goes with this.

The Art

There were many point in Psylocke #8 that would have caused a chill to go down your spine. Moisés Hidalgo saw to making the scary moments downright terrifying, while making the flashback moments between Mitsuki and Kwannon tug on your heart. Joining Hidalgo is Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, who handles the colors and made each panel a work of art with his juxtaposing colors.

Some of my favorite panels of Psylocke #8 have to be when Kwannon is walking through the quite snow with Mitsuki. The dark purples contrasting the white snow was absolutely stunning and did a great job setting an ominous tone.

Final Thoughts

I’ve loved every issue of Psylocke as it’s given a great look into the life of Kwannon, and her life as a ninja. Alyssa Wong continues to impress with what she’s doing with this run, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Overall Grade – 8.4/10
