The Story

Last we left Psylocke, she and Magik traveled to Louisiana to seek the help of one of the Outliers, Deathdream. The heroes were hoping Deathdream would be able to determine what exactly was behind these hauntings that’s taken over Psylocke’s life. While Rogue’s anger towards Psylocke for putting an Outlier in this situation is terrifying, it’s nothing in comparison to whatever is haunting Psylocke taking control of Deathdream. Deathdream gets possessed by ghostly tormenter and attacks Psylocke, Magik, and Rogue. Without hurting Deathdream, the mutants have to find a way to stop the possession and get whatever it is out of him.

The entity behind the haunting still only has eyes for Psylocke, as it knows her name and seems to know everything about her past. It knows about people of her past that Psylocke still feels guilt over, but how can that be? Unless the thing that has been haunting and tormenting Psylocke is in fact something from her past.

While this battle is taking place, Devon seeks out John’s help in finding out what exactly is going on with Psylocke. According to Devon, it’s not unusual for Psylocke to be distant, but she has gone completely dark. Devon can’t track her down, they can’t get in touch with her, and they’re very worried. The only person they can ask for help is John Greycrow.

With so much build up, it’s exciting to see what’s actually haunting Psylocke after seeing her so tormented. Psylocke has such a checkered past, so it makes sense that the haunting was caused by someone she previously knew. I really love how Alyssa Wong makes Psylocke #7 feel so personal to the character, while still making it feel like an X-Men team up.

The longer this run goes, the more invested I am into Psylocke’s life. I love how much she’s cared for by the people in her life like John, Devon, or Magik. Devon and John working together wasn’t something I guessed would happen but I love to see it. Another exciting issue from Alyssa Wong!

The Art

There’s a theme of Psylocke #7 and that theme is ‘haunting’. The artwork throughout the comic book is simply haunting, but in the best way. Vincenzo Carratú, Moisés Hidalgo, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and Ariana Maher really captured the tone of the story and did an incredible job at bringing it to life.

The tone is set immediately with picking up right where we left off in the battle of Deathdream and Psylocke, Magik, and Rogue. The ghost that’s haunting Psylocke uses every chance they get to taunt her, and the artists make you feel the haunting feeling it leaves behind. With Carratú and Hidalgo’s drawings matched with Sifuentes-Sujo’s dark work with the colors, they insured that you’ll read Psylocke with goosebumps on your arms.

Overall Grade – 8.7/10
