Gwenpool #2 – The Big Surprise From The Past

Published:

It’s every character for themselves. Writer Cavan Scott, Artist Stefano Nesi, Colorist Matt Milla, and Letterer Ariana Maher have created another fantastic issue.

We start the issue off with a panel of Peter with Gwen when she died, which then leads to our decoy Gwenpool seeing Peter for the first time since her death. Then, we get Kate’s reaction to this realization. We also get our real Gwenpool’s reaction, and for film fans, this is a deep cut easter egg (If you know and have seen Amazing Spider-Man, this will come as no surprise.)

Following this, Decoy Gwenpool confronts Peter, and reminds him that she is dead because of Peter. A full fight breaks out, with one of Kate’s lightning arrows getting used on Peter. We then see our Gwens fighting. During all of this, an explosion happens in the distance.

Gwen, Kate, and the Avengers then spring into action. We see everyone going and taking the fight to the attackers. While this is happening, Gwen sees someone on one of the rooftops. Meanwhile, Decoy Gwenpool is on a manhunt. She then goes and tries to save Peter, when Gwen stops by to confront Decoy Gwenpool.

This is when Decoy Gwenpool stabs Gwen by accident. Kate and Jeff are there with her. We then see Decoy Gwenpool escape, and the final panel shows Kate and Jeff with Gwen, who is now dead, and Peter on the ground.

Now, this issue was too big to review alone, so NI’s Megan and myself reviewed this together, and you can see our thoughts on the issue below:

The Art

Kat: Stefano’s art in this issue blew my socks off. Between all of the character moments, and the final panel. Stefano’s art, mixed with Matt’s coloring and Ariana’s lettering, the issue came together perfectly. I can’t wait to see what happens next issue.

Megan: Stefano Nesi didn’t mess around when creating the artwork for Gwenpool #2. With panels as exciting as the character herself, Gwenpool #2 was a joy to read with the incredible artwork. Joining Nesi is Matt Milla on colors and Ariana Maher on letters, and together they all make such a fantastic team. Bringing the exciting storyline to life, the artists captured the essence of what makes Gwenpool such a wild character.

The Writing

Kat: Cavan Scott has proven with this issue why Gwenpool is one of the best Marvel Comics characters. His writing this issue takes everything from last issue, and ramps it up to 100. This is a worthwhile read.

Megan: The writer of Gwenpool, Cavan Scott, continues to impress with his writing in this run. Gwenpool is such a weird character, so can’t imagine writing her is an easy feat, but Scott seems to do it with ease. Gwenpool #2 kept me on the edge of my seat, with my eyes on a slowly fading out Spider-Man, an unhinged villain, and Gwenpool who wants absolutely no part of their fight.

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

Kat: 10/10

Megan: 9/10

Final Thoughts

Kat: Cavan Scott and Co. have created a very compelling version of Gwenpool. This issue sets us up for future escapades that Gwen is going to get up to. I’m excited to see where we go from here with the comic.

Megan: I’m so glad that the creative team kept the same energy from the first issue, and made a comic just as exciting as the first. I can’t wait to see where this goes with Gwenpool!
