Welcome Back Gwenpool

We kickstart this issue off in the Weapon X Facility: Beta. 2 agents are after someone in the facility, and they are looking for this person. We see one of the agents gets killed, and the other attacks the assailant. Well, the assailant doesn’t go down, and the other agent gets killed. We then discover that Gwenpool is alive, and her mission is simple: take out the Deathlok clones.

The Calvary Has Arrived

The comic then cuts to New York City, and we see Spider-Man, Kate Bishop, and Jeff The Land Shark. The 3 of them are taking on Fin Fang Foom, and it’s not going well for them at all. But help arrives in the form of Gwenpool in her classic Pink and White suit. After saying hi, she springs into action. Fin Fang Foom takes her out, but it’s Gwenpool, and she doesn’t die that quickly.

GWEN STACY’S HERE

We then see Fin Fang Foom give a villain’s monologue, and he is then defeated by Gwenpool. Jeff then proceeds to run away, and Peter, Kate, and Gwen go and find him. But the dangers are only getting worse for the team. We see fights break out, and 2 Deathloks attacking Gwen. Kate and Peter help her defeat them. After they are defeated, Gwenpool from the future shows up, and she and Earth-616 Gwen go at it. The final panel shows that Gwenpool from the future is Gwen Stacy.

Now, this issue was too big to handle alone, so myself and fellow NI Comics Bullpen member Megan from Vilgiante Vibes will let you check out our opinions below.

The Art

Kat: Stefano Nesi has sold me on this book from this first issue alone. His art with Matt Milla’s colors and Ariana Maher’s lettering work brings this entire first issue together.

Megan: Stefano Nesi managed to match the excitement of the story to the artwork with his use of detail and abstract backgrounds. Pair that with Matt Mill’s use of vibrant colors juxtaposing the darkest of colors, you have a high energy comic that keeps you on the edge of your seat. With the lettering, Ariana Maher never disappoints, and proves it once again with Gwenpool #1. Maher made each sentence have that much more power to the message being relayed.

The Writing

Kat: Cavan Scott continues to impress me with every comic he writes. This new Gwenpool comic is beautifully written, and Cavan knows exactly how to make fans excited for this new run.

Megan: When I heard it would be Cavan Scott behind Gwenpool #1, I was thrilled, as I’m a big big fan of his writing from Star Wars and some of DC. That excitement was rightfully had as Scott proves this talent throughout Gwenpool #1. The comic has so much action, paired with the fourth wall breaking quips we’re accustomed to get from Gwenpool. That’s not even mentioning some of the great side characters we see Gwenpool fight alongside, which is superb. I can’t wait to see what Scott gives us next for Gwenpool!

Overall Grade: 10/10

Kat: 10/10

Megan: 10/10

Final Thoughts

Kat: I have loved Gwenpool for a few years now, and seeing this fresh new comic/story is amazing. I’m excited to see where this story goes from here.

Megan: I’m a huge fan of Gwenpool, and I feel the creative team is absolutely doing her character her justice. I’ve been looking forward to this release for quite some time, and it was everything I was hoping for and more.

It shocks me how so many people, even Gwenpool fans, are so easily buying into this book given the horrible ramifications that lay in wait. Has no one bothered to reach the future solicits? The covers? Can no one read between the lines here or is it just easier to pretend nothing is wrong? They did the same thing with Kamala in another Spider story. They are setting Gwen up to be usurped in some way by this stupid Edgelord Staceypool.

Issue #2 is gonna have her get killed! Why don’t you see where this is going? That this is ultimately going to Harm Gwen, not help her. Why do you people just roll over and give this comic a ten, knowing what is so very likely to end up doing? Which is, in my estimation, to have Gwenpool’s soul be shoved into this awful Staceypool character. They’ll kill her off and trap her inside Staceypool, like some more awful version of Psylocke. She’ll lose everything unique and special about herself. All in the name of doing her a favor. Just like they did with Kamala!

Mark my words, that’s what’s happening. They’ll going to damage this character forever and your implicit trust in this story and author will not be rewarded.
