The Story

After the gripping battle with Liminal, Illyana Rasputina was left worse for wear. Sure, Liminal was defeated, but Cal was made a living seal. Distraught, Illyana went back to the X-Men headquarters in Alaska, awaiting to figure out what to do next.

Unfortunately, Dani hasn’t contacted her about Cal one time, so Illyana is beside herself. Cyclops keeps Illyana busy with X-Men missions, which makes her grateful. One day, on a mission with Psylocke and Juggernaut, Illyana feels an intense burning pain in her mind that can only mean one thing; something bad has happened at the Limbo Embassy.

Once Illyana portals over to the Embassy, she sees that it’s been through an explosion that was meant to assassinate Madelyne Pryor, who’s the current ruler of Limbo.

Madelyne was made the new ruler of Limbo by Illyana, so Illyana was able to live her life away from the hellscape she spent her childhood. Madelyne is the perfect person to take over the hellish realm since her and Illyana are so similar in their upbringing of being used as a tool.

Now that Maddie is the ruler, there are some of her Limbo subjects that are giving her some complications. She needs Illyana’s help to regain control of Limbo. That way, Illyana is able to go back to living her life outside of the hellish realm while Maddie is able to continue to be the ruler she wants to be.

The Writing

After so much excitement with Liminal and the seals, it was nice to see Illyana in this side quest with Madelyne Pryor. I’m interested to see if there’s a difference in Illyana after she went back to Limbo after all this time of fighting off her trauma from being there.

Ashley Allen does wonders with Illyana Rasputina, giving her so much more depth and bringing her dark and mystical story to life with her writing. Magik #6 was a great addition to this fantastic run.

The Art

Jesús Hervás is the artist of Magik #6, and does a phenomenal job at bringing the hellish energy to Limbo. With Arthur Hesli on colors, he and Hervás make the Goblin Queen’s realm feel just how dark and mystical Illyana often describes Limbo. Some of my favorite panels include Madelyne and Illyana fighting the disloyal citizens of Limbo. We see Illyana bringing so much heat to the fight with her Soulsword, and Maddie shows off her beautiful powerset. All in all, the creative team did an excellent job!

Final Thoughts

It was an absolute joy to see Maddie Pryor back as the ruler of Limbo. Illyana going back to Limbo willingly certainly wasn’t what I expected from this run, so it was a lot of fun to see, especially when she’s there to help Maddie.

Overall Grade – 9.1/10
