The Story

Illyana Rasputina has been struggling to keep her darker half, Darkchild, from taking over completely. That hasn’t been a secret, especially from Liminal. Liminal created a wager with Illyana, if she can resist Darkchild for three weeks, he would purge her demonic half from her for good. However, if she can’t resist the demonic half, then Darkchild would rule by Liminal’s side, with no Illyana in sight.

Resisting Darkchild has become a full time job for Illyana, and on top of finding the seals that keep Liminal trapped. While Illyana is doing her best, this isn’t enough to make Dani Moonstar have trust in her, which Illyana unfortunately overheard her say to Cal.

Illyana is feelings so many emotions, but all those have to be put aside when she, Dani, and Cal run into the two mages who were responsible for Liminal’s creation. These mages are more than willing to fight Dani and Illyana, and continue to do so until they attempt to make a mutant sacrifice. This mutant sacrifice, with an innocent mutant civilian, is interrupted by a ghostly voice that can only belong to the one they fear, Liminal. Now, it’s time for the fight between Liminal and Illyana, but how does that include Darkchild?

The Writing

Ashley Allen picks up where we left off in the fourth installment with Illyana in her hurt feels over what she overheard Dani say. Even with that, the tone is immediately struck with the mages causing a ruckus, which has to be handled by Dani and Illyana. This high energy stays throughout the comic, with so many different things taking place throughout Magik #5.

For a 27 page comic book, there was so much substance in the fifth installment. The showdown with Liminal, the tension between Illyana and Darkchild finally reaches a breaking point, Cal, even Illyana getting a motivational talking to by Cyclops. So, so much happens and Allen writes it flawlessly to flow evenly.

The Art

Germán Peralta, Arthur Hesli, and Ariana Maher are the artists of Magik #5, and boy did they deliver. From the very beginning with a mage setting a circle of fire around innocent mutants to an absolutely heartbreaking panel of Illyana at the end, the artwork illustrated the emotions of the comic perfectly. Along with the emotions, there’s also the incredibly mystical action that comes with stories about Illyana Rasputina. With the battle between Liminal and Illyana, I think this is where the artists showcased their talents the best. Illyana looked incredible, the fight looked like something straight from the most beautiful part of Limbo, and all around was nothing short of stunning.

Overall Grade – 8.9/10
