The Story
In The Power Fantasy #8, we got a good look at who Eliza is and her importance to The Family. With getting to know her, we got to see Valentina make her and Etienne’s pitch to Eliza, but now, in The Power Fantasy #9, it’s Magus’ turn to do the same. Eliza arrived to The Pyramid, and Magus locked it up with maximum security right after she arrived. Valentina and Etienne are very aware, but aren’t able to act, so their only option is to wait.

Speaking of those two Superpowers, Etienne just made Valentina aware that Heavy has a child, but that child is a Superpower. Heavy, who’s kept his son a secret for his entire life by having him life in a self contained bubble, has a plan for proving his son is a Superpower. But with proving his son is a Superpower, Heavy has also has been trying to teach his son what it’s like to be a Superpower. Being a Superpower brings so much change to the world, not just the life of the Superpower.
The Writing
The Power Fantasy #9 gives us even more context to the characters and their lives previous to us meeting them. For example, Isabella gives a haunting retelling of her trauma she’s dealt with at the hands of the Atomics. She gives a bigger insight into her complex feelings towards Masumi and, surprisingly enough, Masumi takes it very well.
Kieron Gillen continues to build these lives and personalities of the characters, that give so much depth to the story. The characters keep you locked into the comic, and leave you wanting to know more by the last page. In The Power Fantasy #9, there are so many moving parts with each member of the Family. There’s an obvious tension between the characters that feels like something is being built towards for the future.
The Art
Each character in The Power Fantasy #9 comes with their own tones, and Caspar Wijngaard matches them all perfectly. With the amount of moving parts in the ninth installment, the change in vibes really make the already exciting storyline even more of a good time. My favorite part where I think Wijngaard’s talent showed the most was any flashback panel that had to do with Masumi. The vibrant pinks and blues made the panels jump off the page.
Clayton Cowles is the letterer of The Power Fantasy, and he continues to deliver top quality work in every installment. Cowles gives so much power to each sentence throughout the comic, especially when it’s coming from Etienne.
Overall Grade – 8.6/10
