The Story

After being introduced to Eliza Hellbound and getting a glimpse of her character in The Power Fantasy #7, we now dive deeper into her story. Picking up right where we left off, Valentina is visiting Eliza in her temple. Eliza insists it’s time to confess her sins, though Valentina protests, saying it’s unnecessary. Still, Eliza begins the ritual, stating it’s been one day since her last confession. Her sin today is pride, a theme that shapes everything we learn about her from here on.

The story flashes back to 1985. Eliza is filled with hope and desperation, praying that Magus will choose her to join his Pyramid. She doubts she’ll be picked, but her husband, Dev, reassures her. He believes there’s no way Magus would overlook her, Eliza never uses her powers selfishly, she’s dedicated, and, as Dev points out, Magus clearly has a thing for her.

But when the moment of truth arrives, Eliza’s hopes are crushed. Magus has made his decision—and it’s not in her favor. Instead, he chooses Dev to join the Pyramid, despite harboring resentment toward him. When Eliza confronts him, Magus explains that it’s not her Christianity that kept her out, but the fact that she’s a true believer. That’s when we see Eliza’s pride turn into rage.

The Writing

Kieron Gillen does another phenomenal job with The Power Fantasy, giving us deep and heavy characters that show nothing but depth in their stories. In The Power Fantasy #8, we get a closer look at Eliza, who’s been somewhat of a mystery from the beginning.

Eliza’s story is as hard-hitting as you’d expect, which I absolutely loved. Each one of the characters of the Family has hooked me in with their dramatically different stories and keeps me wanting more and more from them.

The Art

Caspar Wijngaard and Clayton Cowles are the ones behind the fantastic artwork of The Power Fantasy and they continue to impress with the eighth installment. Wijngaard gives such an impressed amount of attention paid to detail, while utilizing the colors so the panels pop off the page. Cowles makes every sentence pack even more of a punch with his work on the lettering.

Some of the best parts of The Power Fantasy #8 have to do with the artwork pertaining to Eliza. In her temple, we see so many stunning panels that are dripping with mystical darkness and magic. Wijngaard and Cowles really showcased their talents in a beautiful way.

Overall Grade – 9.1/10
