Star Trek Red Shirts, coming soon from IDW PUBLISHING, is about to kick us in the nacells! We have never gotten a book from this perspective, or even from this part of the quadrant.

The Writing:

This book does not shy away from page number one! The tone is set, and we will get what’s coming to us! Between the grizzled Veterans and the Battle-Hardened but still NOOBS. The mission is clear, but the consequences are high.

Cantwell pulls no punches, reminding us that sometimes freedom isn’t free. Some will do what they must because “The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few” (SPOCK)

The Art:

Taking place in the TOS era, Levens has done a masterful job not going too “Sci-fi,” having worked on other Trek-related media helps guide her pencil. I will say that because of WHEN this is, we could have had a basic Human crew, but this is Gene’s vision for the future, so we have several species represented and drawn perfectly to contrast the human contingent.

Overall Grade: 9/10

This story in Trek is unlike anything you’ve seen before, and the paneled page perfectly portrays it!

The skillful use of inner monologue helps us better understand our characters, and the same premise was used in communications, too, so it doesn’t crowd up the page.

I typically reserve most #1’s to 8.5, this deserves more than that!! This first book has established the stakes and the characters, so let’s consider this the first act and return for the next one.
