The Devil You Know

As Father Barrera comes to after the attack, he sees Father Stygian trying to get help. All of a sudden, the demon possessed Father Varden attacks Stygian again. Barrera springs into action to save Stygian and together they put down Varden again. Barrera gets help and gets Stygian to the hospital to save his life.

As what happened sets in to Father Barrera at the hospital, Maru shows up. Upon finding out that Stygian is in stable condition, Maru offers a ride home to Barrera. On the ride Maru starts to question what Barrera has learned from the old exorcist. As the questioning gets a little more heated, it’s revealed that Maru has been possessed the entire time. She now wants Barrera to find out where Stygian has been hiding the demons he’s exercised and if he does, she promises him solace.

Secrets Revealed

As we ramp up to the end game of this arc, this issue takes big swings and connects. Gus Moreno has slowly rolled the reveals in this series to near perfection. The suspense which we thought was at an all-time high last issue, goes through the roof in this issue. The big reveal about Maru raises the stakes going into the final issue of this arc.

The art in this book and series is breathtaking. Jakub Rebelka uses the contemporary art style with a classical twist to near perfection. Every panel looks amazing and draws your eyes in. The colors are earthy and dark which matches the tone of the story immaculately.

Final Thoughts

When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #4 is a damn near perfect penultimate issue. Building off the great suspense of the series and then hitting us in the face with an amazing reveal that ups the stakes. This is a must-read series and if you haven’t dived in yet, now is the time! With one issue left, get to the LCS pick up this issue and the three prior issues and enjoy!
