The Story
After traveling to Japan with her father, Kitty Pryde was abducted by Ogun, a psychic assassin and former mentor to Wolverine. Under his control, Ogun trained Kitty and used his psychic powers to mold her into a deadly assassin. Fortunately, Wolverine intervened and defeated the villainous Ogun. Although Kitty hoped to rid herself of the skills he had forced upon her, they remained. Now, she possesses incredible abilities she never wanted- skills that, despite their dark origins, can be used for good. Wolverine empathizes with her struggle but knows that the more they harness Kitty’s abilities, the more lives they can ultimately save.
Living in Japan hasn’t been easy but Wolverine and Kitty have done their best to do what heroes do, fight crime and keep the people safe. When staying with Kitty’s father Carmen, Wolverine’s significant other, M’iko, and a little girl named Amiko, who Wolverine and M’iko took in as their own, things seem to be working well for the mutants. That is until a mysterious force that may have to do with Clam Yashida threatens the mutants, and puts them in a situation they’ve never been in before.
The Writing
I’m a big fan of the comics that fill in the blanks of timelines, like Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1 or Rogue: The Savage Land. I’m glad it’s Chris Claremont who’s behind this comic as he just never seems to miss when it comes to writing our favorite mutants. Claremont delivers an emotional point of view from Kitty, as well as a mature and mentoring role from Wolverine. I really enjoyed seeing these two work off each other, especially when Kitty is experiencing emotions that only Wolverine can identify with.
In Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1, it felt like so much happened in such a small amount of time, as it flowed perfectly courtesy of Claremont. I look forward to seeing what comes next!
The Art
The artwork of Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1 takes you back to the early days of the X-Men comics, which I absolutely loved. Damian Couceiro does a phenomenal job at making you feel the nostalgia of the comics while also modernizing it. Couceiro’s excellent amount of attention paid to the detail, every page is more exciting than the last. Carlos Lopez handles the colors of Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1 and really excels at creating vibrant panels that give you that superhero energy while basking in realism.
Overall Grade – 8/10
