The Story

After Peter Parker participated in the Secret War on Battleworld, he left that adventure donning a brand new black suit, the symbiote suit. With the new suit, Peter, AKA Spider-Man, got back to work to defend his city of New York against the usual villains, like Shocker.

It feels good for Peter to get back to being the everyone’s favorite friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but Parker luck strikes again. While in a fight with Shocker, the hero and villain were interrupted by a not so usual villain, the King of Monsters, Godzilla.

With his new black suit and his heroic need to save the city he loves, Spider-Man swings into action to get the monstrous Kaiju out of New York with as little damage as possible.

Although it’s a pretty straightforward plan, it still proves to be easier said than done, especially when there’s a secret plan in action involving Godzilla that Peter isn’t privy to. With Godzilla on a rampage, Peter betrayed by his symbiote suit, and a city being destroyed more and more by the second, what is Peter to do?

The Writing

Joe Kelly delivered an action packed comic that had the usual humor of Spider-Man we all know and love and pulled it off flawlessly. With the help of Spider-Man-centric characters like Black Cat and MJ, it feels like a classic Spider-Man comic filled with funny quips, Peter’s outside of the box thinking, and a lot of excitement.

I loved that it was set a couple weeks after Secret Wars instead of making it a more recent story, because I think it fit so much better, especially with the black suit.

Any fan of the King of Monsters will get a ton of enjoyment from Godzilla Vs. Spiderman #1. It has all the excitement that comes in a Kauji story with the classic Spidey energy, and it’s all handled expertly by Kelly.

The Art

Nick Bradshaw, Rachelle Rosenberg and Joe Caramagna are to thank for the excellent artwork in Godzilla Vs. Spider-Man #1. Nick Bradshaw absolutely killed it with how much detail he was able to provide in each panel, giving so much depth to on every page.

Rachelle Rosenberg always impresses when she handles the colors, as she creates works of art that perfectly matches the tone of the comic. Rosenberg especially showcases her talents towards the end in the climactic fight between the main characters. Joe Caramagna is the exclamation point at the end of this exciting read who handles the lettering perfectly.

Overall Grade – 9.4/10
