The Story
Big things are happening on Thunderbolt Ranch, home to the Thunderbolts, the anti-kaiju taskforce! Thunderbolt Ross and his scientist team have a plan to capture the terrorizing Godzilla once and for all. Can it really be that simple?
Thunderbolt Ranch holds many secrets, including monsters of its own. To have the means to take down Godzilla would be something incredible. Ross is ready and willing to put his plan to the test with the help of his team. That includes Dr. Banner and Dr. Demonicus.
Their plan includes to use Mothra as bait. It is a very ricky play, but also is seen as cruel by Dr. Banner. Dr. Demonicus counters that Dr. Banner is weak and these monsters must be cleansed, so he sees this plan is the best way to do it.
Of course, when dealing with a kaiju, plans don’t often play out the way they were originally intended. This means the anti-kaiju taskforce will need a back up plan, a back up plan that Dr. Demonicus is more than happy to provide. Even so, Dr. Banner has doubts all around the board of these plans, but luckily he always has a backup plan of his own, one that he can’t control.
The Writing
The story of Godzilla Vs. Hulk #1 is one that had me on the edge of my seat throughout the read. You could really feel the exhilaration in the writing. It the usual feeling you get when diving into a story of a kaiju. Gerry Duggan grabs your attention immediately in the story with Thunderbolt Ross explaining the Thunderbolts’ most dangerous project yet: capturing Godzilla. With the plan starting out rather quickly, and Dr. Banner already showing signs of doubt. It’s hard to take your eyes away from the pages as you see the story play out.
When the action really gets going, there are a few things that happen that you really didn’t think would. There were a couple times where I just stared at the screen, in awe of what I was seeing. Duggan deserves his flowers for making Godzilla Vs. Hulk #1 such an exciting thrill ride that I didn’t want to get off of.
The Art
The creative team behind Godzilla Vs. Hulk #1 absolutely nailed it, delivering a gritty, action-packed showdown that’s impossible to look away from. The stunning visuals by Giuseppe Camuncoli, Daniele Orlandini, Federico Blee, and Ariana Maher truly elevated the comic, taking the story to a whole new level.
Federico Blee’s mastery of color stood out, using muted tones contrasted with vibrant highlights to add depth and intensity to every scene. Giuseppe Camuncoli’s meticulous detail in each panel was remarkable. Many of them were so well-composed they could have worked as full-page spreads on their own.
Speaking of full-page shots, the ones featuring Godzilla were some of the most impressive I’ve seen in a while. The entire art team went above and beyond as this comic is a visual triumph.
Overall Grade – 10/10
