Spring Can’t Catch a Break in The Seasons #3
The Seasons rolls on as we have this mysterious, magical, probably evil Carnival in town and no one will listen to poor little Spring Season. In this issue, We pick up where we left off with Winter Season berating Spring for her wild imagination and clumsy nature. It’s really all unfair, as we have been in Spring’s point of view this entire time, knowing she’s telling the truth.
Catch up with my review of The Seasons issue 2!
It’s not only her sister that’s giving her a hard time though, it’s the whole town! Old ladies are forcing her to do their dry cleaning, she’s banned from her favorite bakery, she’s getting charged for things that weren’t her fault…the list goes on!
Suspicions Confirmed in The Seasons #3
When she gets home from a rough day though, her sister Winter seems to try and soften the way she approaches Spring. Things start to seem better, until later when Spring here’s a noise upstairs and discovers a sinister act! Will Winter believe her this time?!
Putting Us in the Shoes of Spring Seasons
Rick Remender has spent plenty of time making us feel empathetic for the young Spring Season sister. She’s bright and innocent and a huge magnet for bad luck. Now he takes that relationship we have with her and cranks it to 11.
First Look! Ten-Ton Titan Terrier Unleashes Kaiju-Sized Adventure
Her sister Winter is so cold and fractious to her. The town of New Gaulia see her as a sort of Albatross. No one want’s anything to do with her, unless she caused them any damage. It can be so frustrating as the reader to know that Spring is innocent of everything and still be so chastised. It really puts us into the shoes of the protagonist.
A Foul Plot is Afoot in The Seasons #3
What Remender is cooking up under all of this is just waiting to explode like a volcano. We finally get a hint of that lava when a couple of the carnival workers break into the Season’s home. They seem rather brutish and one of them turns into some kind of Imp or Gremlin, confirming their magical powers! There’s a bit of action and comedy here that balance out well. Spring is fearless and passionate about her family as she fights off the intruders.
The Art of The Season #3
Not much changes in the style artwork as I’ve reviewed in previous issues. However, It’s a fantastic issue that takes a lot of chances with angles and colors. The scenery is beautiful whether we are inside the home, or on the streets of New Gaulia. It’s a very immersive setting thanks to little details, accurate coloring, and fantastic sound effects!

The series thus far has felt so much like a classic cartoon strip in the vein of Johnny Quest or the art of The Hardy Boys. That is still represented her, but the human emotion aspect is executed so much better. When we get to the Carnival henchmen, there’s a transformation that comes off as whimsical and otherworldly, strong in cartoon aspect. The character should seem comical in a way, yet his dialogue and body language make it feel dangerous.
Overall Grade 9/10
This issue really takes us to the extremes of the way Spring feels in this world. With all of the negative directed at her, she still believes in herself and her family. She still makes the right choices. This series may be a slow burn thus far, but it’s been a fascinating one with so many layers. The artwork is stunning and creates a visual tool for conveying the big emotions in the story. I’m happy we finally got a peak at what The Seasons are dealing with. I’m ready to see some more action and adventure!
