A High-Speed Collision of Two Iconic Universes
Some crossovers feel inevitable, and DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #1 is one of them. When you have the fastest heroes from two worlds—The Flash and Sonic—sharing the same pages, it’s bound to be an electrifying ride. But throw in Darkseid, the Chaos Emeralds, and the Justice League, and you’ve got a blockbuster event in the making.
Written by Sonic veteran Ian Flynn, with art by Adam Bryce Thomas, colors by Matt Herms, and letters by Becca Carey, this issue kicks off a must-read miniseries that blends the fun, adventure, and world-saving stakes both franchises are known for.
The Writing – Speed, Wit, and Deep-Cut Lore
Ian Flynn is no stranger to Sonic comics, and his expertise shines through in this issue. Right from the start, he establishes the stakes with Darkseid’s menacing presence as he sets his sights on the Chaos Emeralds—an ultimate power source that would make even the god of Apokolips unstoppable. Sonic and his crew, used to battling mad scientists and ancient deities, are in for a whole new level of threat.

Flynn does a great job balancing accessibility for younger readers while throwing in references that longtime fans of both Sonic and DC will appreciate. The dialogue is quick and snappy, never slowing down the pacing. The highlight? The interactions between the heroes.
- Sonic and Flash – The ultimate speedster showdown! Their friendly rivalry and mutual admiration make for some of the book’s best moments, filled with witty banter and high-energy action.
- Shadow and Batman – Brooding icons unite. The parallels between these two are drawn perfectly, making for a surprisingly deep dynamic.
- Tails and Cyborg – A tech-savvy dream team. Their geeky bond over gadgets feels natural and fun.
- Wonder Woman and Amy Rose – A warrior’s mentorship in the making! Seeing Amy’s determination clash with Diana’s seasoned wisdom adds a fresh layer to the story.
- Green Lantern and Silver – Two heroes fueled by willpower and hope, working together in a way that just makes sense.
Reading this comic with my two daughters—one an experienced young comic reader, the other just starting—was a joy. They were able to instantly connect with the characters while getting swept up in the excitement. Flynn makes sure that no matter your level of familiarity with either franchise, you’ll find something to enjoy.
The Art, Colors, and Letters – A Visual Rush
Adam Bryce Thomas’ art is the perfect fit for this kind of crossover. His dynamic layouts make every panel feel fast-paced and action-packed. Sonic’s world retains its trademark cartoonish energy, while the DC heroes blend seamlessly into it without feeling out of place.
A standout moment is the panel where the characters are introduced to each other—each hero paired with their Sonic counterpart. It’s a clever way to immediately establish relationships while making for an eye-catching splash page.
Matt Herm’s colors elevate the storytelling, bringing a vibrant, kinetic energy to every scene. The bright hues of Sonic’s world contrast beautifully against the darker tones of Apokolips, reinforcing the high-stakes nature of the battle. The shading and motion lines further enhance the sense of speed, especially in the race between Sonic and Flash.
Becca Carey’s lettering is another highlight. The whirrs, zooms, and booms feel like they’re ripped straight from a Sonic video game, immersing readers in the action. Certain narration boxes also have a slight retro-gaming aesthetic, which is a nice nostalgic touch.
Final Verdict – A Must-Read for Fans of Both Worlds
Overall Grade: 8.5/10
DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #1 is a crossover that delivers on its premise. It’s a fun, high-energy read packed with action, humor, and character moments that make it more than just a gimmick. Whether you’re a Sonic fan, a DC fan, or just love a good superhero team-up, this issue is well worth picking up.
With a strong creative team and a thrilling setup, this miniseries has all the potential to become a standout event. If the first issue is any indication, we’re in for a wild, speed-force-powered ride.
