In preparation for the new Superman movie hitting theaters in July, let’s reflect on former Man of Steel’s over the years. I love that each of them have their own unique take on the character, and as time goes by, it becomes more important to have Superman in the media.
9. Superman Vs. The Mole Man (1951)
George Reeves was an incredible actor as Superman. He really gave hope to adults and children around the world. Just like other actors that have been in our past, he also struggled to continue the character. I’ve seen the television show that he has been in, and it was a solid film.
8. Atom vs. Superman (1950)
Staring Kirk Alyn, who became one of those “classic” Superman, is starring alongside Lyle Talbot, who plays Atom Man. This classic take on the Superman story has them fighting. This one is from the 50’s so of course, it does not hold up to some of the current iterations of Superman. Still love to appreciate some of the older movies though.
7. Superman (1948)
Kirk Alyn’s take on Superman is quite astounding. Just like I said for the Atom vs. Superman, his take on the character is heavily influenced by the comics. Like many of the movies before the modern era, it seems that it becomes apparent that comic accuracy really starts at this film.
6. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)
Christopher Reeve can go down in history as one of the greatest Superman of all time. But, this movie doesn’t quite make the top ranking. Reeves already made three Superman movies, but the plot was lacking to push the movie along. It does have Gene Hackman (who recently passed this year), returning as Lex Luthor. I did find the movie entertaining on a basic level, but, there definitely are some plot holes that are within the movie.
5. Superman III (1983)
Again, third time is usually the charm, but not for this Reeves movie. I think this movie was okay, and it did what it needed to do. It seems that they kind of just put this movie together. It seemed that Reeves still had the energy and determination to do this movie. Later on though, it was explained in Superman: The Christopher Reeves Story, that Reeves was getting tired of portraying the Man of Steel. Shocking, because he was good in this particular role.
4. Superman II (1980)
The sequel of the iconic “Superman” in 1973, is a pleasantly surprised film that gets audiences excited to see Reeves as Superman again. It jumps right into the world, and we get to see Margaret Kidder as Reeve’s Lois Lane. It was apparent that there was an excitement to see Clark Kent interact with Lois Lane. I also enjoyed seeing the villain in this film. One negative was when Superman spends the night with Lois Lane.
3. Superman Returns (2006)
Brandon Routh takes on the continuation of Reeve’s Superman films. Routh brings a certain kind of heroic and kind energy to the film. I really enjoyed seeing him interact with Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). It really does give homage to the Reeve’s films and this film in particular is on my rewatch list. In this film Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) gives an unforgettable performance.
2. Man of Steel (2013)
Henry Cavill’s performance in ‘Man of Steel’ is one of my all time favorite films. Henry understood the Superman character to the T. The only thing that he needed to work on was his Clark Kent. I also was not the biggest fan of his Lois Lane (Amy Adams). For what the movie was, the eyes were definitely on Henry. I really wish they had given him the chance to make a sequel and really show more of the adventures of Superman/Clark Kent’s life.
1. Superman (1978)
This film is an all time favorite, starring Christopher Reeves. Reeves had a total understanding of both Superman and Clark Kent. His charisma that he brought to the film was amazing. Even his Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman, rest in peace as of this year), was a great addition as well. This will always be a top movie for me.
