Redcoat #10: Was it 100 years of trying to stay one step ahead of his enemies that made Simon a good shot, or was it his time as a soldier? Enter Annie Oakley, the best shot in the west, who steals men’s money and our beloved Simon’s heart. Could this be the moment he decides to stay grounded or is love shooting nothing but blanks.

Creative Team:
Geoff Johns: (WRITER)
Bryan Hitch (PENCILLER and COVER)
Andrew Currie (INKS)
Brad Anderson (COLORS and COVER)
Rob Leigh (LETTERS)
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The Story:
Ten issues in, it can be difficult for some to keep a story fresh, exciting, and unpredictable, yet Johns and Hitch keep this story exciting on every page. Simon has become a lovable and endearing character that is easy for the audience to connect with. Every issue we peel back the layers into Simon and how deep down he is a hero despite everything he says to the contrary.
Rob is leveling up the story in this issue by adding in the effects through letters. The sounds of doubt coming from Simon or the accent that Annie has in which we can somehow hear is not done without Rob’s amazing work on the letters.
The Artwork:
Brad, Bryan, and Andrew continue to slay it when it comes to stellar artwork. The way everything is drawn and colored brings about a vividness and realism to this adventure. Showing the fear and doubt on Simon’s face when he is faced with a real-life scenario versus when he is attempting to win money and impress Annie are small examples showcasing the details throughout. The team even manages to bring about a scene of suspense when Simon is questioning himself on taking a shot to save a family. The way they draw the tension on the faces and it ends with a shot through the head which reminds us that this is not all family fun. All of this keeps the story fresh and gripping in many ways.
Final Thoughts:
Redcoat #10 continues to keep Simon’s adventures fun and exciting and the audience on the edge of their seats. His journey through time has us ready to see whom he crosses paths with next; all the while, there is a larger story being told ending with a bit of a cliff-hanger. Redcoat continues to be one of my favorite comics out at the moment!
