Shipwrecked on an Island

Captain Coffin is navigating his ship and crew through a storm on their way to Oban, a city on an island. As they look for the lighthouse to guide them in, they run a ground on a sand bar, which gets them stuck on the beach. The lighthouse operator meets them on the beach and warns them of the plague that has struck Ulva and tells them not to go there. However, Captain Coffin pushes forward hoping for a warm dry bed for him and his crew.

Once in Ulva, the Captain and his crew find an abandoned town that looks like something wild has attacked it. It is at this point that they are confronted by Lieutenant Montague and his soldiers. After a brief standoff, the Lieutenant takes Coffin and his men to a monastery that was setup as a fortress to meet Colonel Ludgate. The Colonel discovers that Coffin and his men are hunters, so he offers them a job to hunt whatever is terrorizing the island, in return they will pay them and help get their ship unstuck.

A Hunt for the Unknown

This first issue of The Lycan does an amazing job of building a world and leaving the reader in suspense about what will happen next. The writing team does a great job of developing the characters, well keeping enough in the darkness to keep the reader guessing. The name of the book keeps you on the lookout for Lycans, but the fact that they never show up in this issue makes the suspense that much more impactful.

The art in this book is very good and really helps with the old time feel. The art makes you believe you are back in 1797. The colors are dark and match the tone of the story perfectly. Each panel is its own journey on its own, and really makes you stop and look at each panel.

Final Thoughts

The Lycan #1 is a really good first issue to get one hyped for what is to come. When the only drawback is that it’s a slow burn, you are in the right hands. Make sure to sign into Comixology and give this first issue a read and then make sure you return for issue two and beyond.

Overall Grade: 9/10
