Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing issue #15 of Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures from Daniel Jose Older & Dark Horse Comics!
The battle continues to rage on Eriadu and things have not gone smoothly! Qort was hurt pretty badly, and the Nihil continue to fight tooth and nail. But will our heroes prevail? Let’s jump into it!
Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #15 by Daniel Jose Older (writer), Toni Bruno (illustrator), Michael Atiyeh (color art), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letterer’s), Harvey Tolibao & Kevin Tolibao (cover) is a very solid issue in the High Republic storyline & continues to up the tension.
After kicking things off with a bang in the last issue, it feels like things kind of took the proverbial foot off the gas a little bit. It’s still an action packed issue, but I don’t feel like it took the momentum built up in issue 14 and raised the stakes.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
The story focuses on several different perspectives and really adds to the overall chaotic feeling of an intergalactic war taking place on a singular planet. On the other hand, the story in this issue feels like it’s simply setting up the major players for the end of the battle coming down the road.
The best part of the story for me is the surprise appearance of Tera Sinube, a Jedi master who was first introduced in season two of The Clone Wars television series. I’d forgotten he was alive for quite a long time prior to that series but at no point did I expect to see him turn up in this series.
The artwork is done by Toni Bruno, and it’s a little too different from the style Harvey Tolibao did in the previous issue for my liking. It took me out of it a few times while reading the issue because it wasn’t what I was used to. It’s not the worst I’ve ever seen, but by no means is it going into the hall of fame.
Overall GRADE: 7.9/10
FINAL POINT: Daniel Jose Older pens a good story that fans who’ve been following since the first issue will enjoy, but casual fans who might be looking to pick it up on a whim might not. The artwork also doesn’t enhance the story like I’m used to and takes away from the experience in certain panels. Overall, it’s an issue that I wouldn’t put high on your must read list.
