Who Are The Seasons and Why Are They in Danger?

The city of Neocairo has gone completely silent. No one is entering, no one is exiting. No news. No communication. It’s as if the city itself doesn’t even exsist. The only sign of life is a dog barking at a group of carnival clowns as they pack up their wagons and ride out of town. The streets are littered with what looks like comatose citizens. What happened here? No one knows, and as of right now, neither do we!

The story moves from there to the quaint little village of New Gaulia. The sister named Spring is quickly in pursuit of a letter addressed to her from her sister, Autumn. The letter finds a way to escape her grasp at every turn in the most comedic and absurd ways. We meet the townspeople along her chase and learn more about the character of Spring. Finally she catches the letter and things get serious with a warning from Autumn that may be too late. The carnival is town!

The Seasons #1 is a Foundation for Great Characters

Rick Remender brings us a fantastic introduction to his story, setting, and characters in issue 1 of The Seasons. The mystery in the opening act immediately captures your attention and pulls you in looking for more. The dark and mysterious vibe is quickly transition to one of warmth and whimsy as Spring makes her way through New Gaulia.

Remender masterfully introduces us to not only Spring, but the entire cast of townsfolk through her run ins with them along the way. The character work is done with minimal exposition or dialogue. Spring’s character is revealed on her journey as she argues with her pet goldfish, strapped to the back of her scooter. She’s clumsy yet empathetic, nobody really cares for her hijinks, and she’s extremely dedicated to her job as a mail courier.

Classic Artwork and Vibrant Colors Makes The Seasons Turn!

The beauty of classical minimalism is a breath of fresh air in the artwork for this issue. Paul Azaceta draws something akin to classic cartoons strips like Tin Tin, Johnny Bravo, or even the works of Hayao Miyazaki! There’s an innocence and beauty to contrast something wicked brewing underneath that makes me so engaged. You may want to feel at ease and laugh, but you’re constantly wondering what’s really going on. The physical action flows well and makes for something you’d see in traditional animated movies.

Grommets is a blast from the past!

The colors are absolutely wonderful. Bright, vibrant colors adorn the pages. The carnival parade in New Gualia is a blast to look at. I really enjoy the contrast between these colors as they pertain to Spring and the toned down Sepia of Autumns point on view.

Finally, is there a book on a LCS right now with Rus Wooten’s name on it that isn’t a hit?! His voiceover boxes are perfect and easy to read. His sound effects are immersive. This issue depends a lot on action and images, so to make use of his limited space is well done.

Overall Grade: 10/10

I’ll be honest with you, this has the potential to be one of the best of the year. There’s a great mystery/horror story brewing underneath a beautiful outer shell. The pacing in this issue was perfect. Dialogue and exposition were kept to a minimum, allowing the characters to show us who they are. This felt a lot like the great comic strips I used to read as a kid in newspapers. The Seasons is an instant classic!
