Plot Summary

Following Dr. Doom’s revelation as the new Sorcerer Supreme, Reed Richards embarks on a mission to understand the science of magic. He works tirelessly to uncover what lies behind the magical barrier encircling Latveria. Sue suggests they consult Dane Whitman, the Black Knight, who is well-versed in both science and magic. Upon visiting Dane, they discover he has melted down his iconic Ebony Blade and is behaving oddly. He directs them to seek the ‘Fated Blade’ as a key to enter Doom’s fortress. This quest takes them on an unexpected adventure through the Western Front of World War I, filled with peculiar occurrences. But Doom still has a few tricks of his own up his sleeve…

The Art

While the art style in this issue are not my personal favorite, they effectively capture the dynamics of each scene. The artwork excels with expressive, detailed facial expressions. Later on in the issue, we’re transported to other realms where the coloring is vibrant and eye-popping. These pages stand out as particularly imaginative and epic, making them some of my favorite aspects of this issue.

The Writing

From various previous issues I’ve read, I’ve really enjoyed Ryan North’s writing. This issue starts with a little more silliness than I normally like. Despite the whimsical tone, a clever twist later in the story enriches it with unexpected depth and enjoyment. Some plot developments might seem contrived. Yet, North’s portrayal of Reed Richards reveals a deep understanding of the character. This issue is an engaging intro to the “One World Under Doom” series, effectively balancing fun and plot development.

Overall Thoughts

Though some character interactions initially seemed odd, the overall story was ultimately enjoyable. The portrayal of the Black Knight initially seemed off but made sense in the context of the complete story. This issue was definitely a fun read and sets the stage well for the upcoming arc. The cliffhanger at the end is particularly exciting, leaving me eager for the next installment!
