Doctor Doom has spent a life knowing pain and being the strongest being. Meanwhile, Rocket Racoon is known to have a good time while being the smartest being alive. So why has Doctor Doom come to Rocket for help? What is the meaning of life? Is this the team-up we didn’t know we needed? To the beginning of the universe we go!

Kick it Off With the Art:
Starting with the cover Gary Frank and Alex Sinclair serve up a wonderful-looking cover. Rocket and Doom share drinks in a dingy and rustic location. There is a contrast between the two, with Rocket in bliss and Doom looking miserable. It gives us a taste of what is to come.
Inside the pages Will and Andrew treat us to a feast of wonderful art and colors. There are scenes where Rocket is sitting at a table with more food than anyone should know what to do with and still complains of pizza. The level of detail drawn in those scenes are a treat. The colors are bursting from bright lights to the green of Doom’s cloak. The colors really are incredible within this issue.
Will’s drawing and ability to make Doom’s cloak feel as though it is moving as he walks is an impressive feat. There is one panel where we go down Doom’s past that left me in awe as it is a spiral of past events that just show a full insane display of talent.
The Story:
Michael is able to capture each personality expertly. Doom’s gloomy and serious attitude meshes better than expected with Rocket’s sarcasm. It is unusual for Doom to be searching for help and recognizing that Rocket is a wealth of scientific knowledge is a testament to understanding these characters.
Doom is not without humor as he gives us plenty of dry humor such as petting Rocket saying Thor said he enjoyed it. The editors even get in on the fun with back and forth banter that Cory captures within the monologuing of the panels.
Final Thoughts:
Doctor Doom and Rocket Racoon is a buddy comedy through the expanses of time that I did not know I needed this week. The humor and level of seriousness in the search for the meaning of life are appropriate given the current world. It offers an excellent escape and some laughs. This is a must-read issue!
