The Incredible Hulk Journey

In the previous issue of The Incredible Hulk, Charlie and Hulk were leaving Las Vegas looking for answers on where to go from their huge showdown with Eldest. To make things complicated, Charlie had become the host of Lycana, the Mother of Skinwalkers aka Mother of Werewolves. This kind of power doesn’t come free and Werewolf by Night hunts them down to make that clear.

Now we’re smack dab in the middle of two fights between Hulk and Varcolac as well as Charlie and Werewolf by Night. Varcolac and Hulk fight just because. It’s The Immovable Object vs The Irresistible Force. Jack Russell aka Werewolf by Night fights to teach Charlie a lesson. She doesn’t understand the responsibilities on the Godskin she wears. Russell needs her to understand the curse that she has accepted to bear.

Writing a Big Incredible Hulk Fight

Phillip Kennedy Johnson takes this issue as an opportunity to build up the legend that is Varcolac. His power is immense and he takes a brutal beating from the Hulk only to annoy him into changing the battlefield. He pulls the Hulk down into his Den of Thorn and Flame, basically Hell for werewolves. It’s here that we see the true form of Varcolac and a warning of Charlie’s fate if she continues her current path.

The Art of The Incredible Hulk

We get an action packed issue from artist Danny Earls. His designs for Varcolac bring the intensity of the character to new heights. It is a massive character in comparison to Hulk with sharp lines, big teeth and claws, and demonic touch to drive it all home. He truly feels like a threat to the big green guy. Speaking of the Varcolac design, Werewolf by Night and Lycana look amazing as well. I love the big toothy werewolf mouths and sharp fur looks.

Colors by Matt Wilson are vibrant and rich. He really perfects the balance of these bright colors with the blacks of the shadows brings great depth to the environment. It also brings contrasts with the cool colors of the protagonists, vs the warm colors of the villain and his hellish surroundings. That runs parallel with the lettering work by Corey Petit. This issue is full of word bubbles that signify a demonic like voice or big sound effects.

Overall Grade: 7.5/10

This issue was a action packed fight from beginning to end. Big werewolf action full of teeth, blood, fire, and haymakers! It was a lot of fun to read but basically, it was a filler issue. We learned more about what the power of Lycana is all about and that Charlie’s fate is pretty bleak if she continues on. There was a ton of foreshadowing and set up for what’s to come.
