Marvel Reintroduces a Cult-Favorite Hero with a Bold New Look
The Marvel Universe is set to see the return of a fan-favorite legacy hero next month in Sam Wilson: Captain America #2. Writers Evan Narcisse and Greg Pak, alongside artist Eder Messias, are bringing Josiah X back into the spotlight—and he’s got a striking new look courtesy of cover artist Taurin Clarke. With a thrilling plot, dynamic character development, and the introduction of the son of Isaiah Bradley into the fold, this promises to be one of the most talked-about issues of the year.
A Legacy Reignited
Josiah X, originally created by Christopher Priest and Joe Bennett for The Crew in 2003, carries the weight of an extraordinary legacy. As the son of Isaiah Bradley—the original Black Captain America and a victim of secret super-soldier experiments—Josiah has always embodied the struggle against injustice while forging his unique path. Known for protecting marginalized communities and exposing societal inequities, Josiah is now reintroduced with a renewed mission and purpose.
“I’ve loved the character of Josiah X ever since he first appeared,” says Evan Narcisse. “When we meet him as the Shadow Soldier in Sam Wilson: Captain America, he’s at the next stage of his evolution, someone who’s answered those existential questions with a new codename, new uniform, and specific outlook.”
A New Look for a New Era
Updating Josiah X for a modern audience required careful consideration. Taurin Clarke’s design integrates elements of Josiah’s past while reflecting his current mindset. His covert-ops-inspired uniform incorporates chainmail from his original costume for additional armor and pays homage to his roots with red, gold, black, and green accents.
Clarke explains, “He’s currently operating in the shadows, but he’s still a byproduct of his time as America’s forgotten super soldier. We wanted his new design to resonate with fans while staying true to his history.”
What to Expect in Sam Wilson: Captain America #2
The series follows Sam Wilson as he uncovers the nefarious plans of the shadowy organization Eaglestar. In issue #2, Sam faces off against the Red Hulk, Eaglestar’s head of security. Just as the stakes escalate, Josiah X enters the fray. Will he be an ally, or does he have his own agenda?
The creative team, which includes Eder Messias and Valentine De Landro (set to join in issue #3), promises a gripping narrative filled with action, moral complexity, and layered storytelling.
