It’s the Howliday season at Monster High. And everyone is getting ready for the Howliday Ball. Writer Ben Khan, Artist Sonia Liao, Colorist Ben Glendining, and Letterer Neil Uyetake have created an epic Monster High Howliday issue.

The issue starts a few years before the start of the comic series. We see Frankie at MH a day before the new school year starts. She is trying to figure out where all of her classes are. While she is exploring around, she hears a noise.

We see a door with chains and a wood plank surrounding it. There is someone inside the room. What transpires is Frankie ends up talking to the person in the room. And we find out that his name is Johnny Spirit. He’s in the room because he is serving a 3,000-year detention sentence.

We then cut to present day. And we pick up with Frankie, Clawdeen, and Draculaura at lunch. And we see them talking about the Howliday Ball. Frankie ends up mentioning that she is trying to make a date for the dance again. We do see a little bit of the process. And it seems like it’s not working all that well for her.

We then see Johnny in the creepteria, and he mentions that students are missing. He and Clawdeen’s brother Clawd Wolf then have an exchange of words with each other. We then cut to Frankie and Cleo in the hallway. And Frankie ends up mentioning in that conversation that she can’t dance. The reason for that is: Frankie’s dad gave her 2 left feet.

The issue then shows Cleo trying to help Frankie dance. And at the end we see Johnny complimenting her. And Frankie gets angry at him. He broke his promise to her to talk more once he got out of detention. And the conversation goes from fighting to Frankie asking Johnny to be her date to the Ball. And we find out that they are going to the Ball together.

We then see the girls in their outfits. And for anyone who owns the Howliday Frankie doll, that is the exact dress she wears in this comic for her Ball outfit. Clawdeen and Draculaura’s outfits are also based on the Howliday dolls that Mattel released. And that is a detail I appreciate about their outfits.

The issue then cuts to Johnny showing up on his motorcycle. And we see him and Frankie riding to MH for the Ball. We then see the inside of the gym decorated for the Ball. And we also see the entire student body enjoying themselves as well. And then we see Cleo in her Howliday Ball dress, and she is oozing Regal.

We proceed to see the girls having fun dancing. And the issue cuts to Johnny playing with one of the smoke machines for a currently unknown reason. And then Johnny and Frankie get to have that dance together. And then we find out why Johnny was playing with the smoke machine. He put a truth potion in it.

Draculaura is able to help Frankie and Johnny escape the Ball before the rest of the students find him. The final pages show Johnny and Frankie sharing a moment before he leaves the school.

Final Score: 10

IDW is continuing to show why their Monster High comic is one of the best Indie series on the market. Between the writing and the art, both longtime and new fans can find something to love with it.
