How Luck Changes

A group of friends is on a fishing trip, when they enter a weird storm. Before they know what’s going on, a creature takes out their boat and them. Meanwhile, we are introduced to Tess, a woman who is down on her luck and is being shuck down for the location of her husband.

After getting away from the goons, Tess returns to her family. They must run away again and quickly. But before they can do that there is a knock on the door and a letter slides under the door. It is addressed to Antoinette which is Tess’s real name. Enclosed is a letter that states her father has died and she has an inheritance. Along with the letter is 3 tickets and a stack of money.

Tess collects the children, and they head off to find out about the inheritance. Once at the boat dock they are met by Faria, who tells them they will be going to the manor Tess inherited that is on a private island. However, once they get there it’s discovered that something bigger is afoot.

Paradise Lost

Archaic #1 is a good introduction into this brand-new world. The story is shrouded in mystery and as the layers are peeled back it unfolds in an interesting way. Melissa F. Olson does a great job of building anticipation and not giving too much away.

The art in this issue feels like a throwback to an older style. It has almost a comic strip look and feel to it. With this comes a retro color pallet that matches the style very well. The panel layout and the lettering are also very complimentary to the art as well.

Final Thoughts

Archaic #1 is a solid opening issue for this new series. Revealing just enough to show what the story is, but holding enough back to keep you intrigued. This is a book worth keeping an eye on as it has a huge upside and potential. If you are looking for a first issue to jump onto a new story this week at the LCS, this is one worth giving a shot to.

Final Grade: 8/10
