Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #4:

Donatello is as broken as ever, and his mind is still broken from his travel through time—however, the forces of evil do not care how broken he is as they close in on him, forcing him into a mutant zoo to fight for the rich and twisted. Can Donatello muster enough strength to fend off those who seek to destroy him?

The Artwork:

This issue is a stark departure from the butt-kicking epic fighting we have seen in the previous three issues. Burnham and Reber craft up a horror movie before our very eyes, as Donny is a shell of who he was. They showcase a broken and shriveled Turtle who is not the strong and muscular Turtle we are accustomed to seeing. It almost makes you teary eyed seeing the filth him and the other mutants are forced to live in.

One thing remains the same, however, within the drawing of our heroes. They all maintain the look of determination and selflessness we grew up with. Even Donny will put his brave face on, which is drawn and shaded so well. The triumphant moment our Turtles reunite shows just how much of a husk Donatello is now.

The Writing:

Jason Aaron has taken this story of revenge and brought a horrifying and sad twist to this issue. Showcasing the true horrors of human beings and that at his core Donatello will never give up and fight to his final breath to save the weak. That, mixed with how deranged he has become, makes this issue the best of the series so far. Ending in a triumphant manner helps us shake off the horrors in the previous pages, ending on a high note with a taste of what is to come.

Overall:

TMNT #4 is a dark and somber tale and a reminder that not all of our heroes live happily forever. And yet, amongst the tears and broken Donatello rises a hero from the ashes, much like a Phoenix, in such a way that will make the reader shout for joy. Could you get your hands on this issue and grab a box of tissues? This one’s terrific.

10/10!
