Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the third issue of the Echoes of Fear story from The High Republic Adventures from George Mann & Dark Horse Comics!

The search continues for Jedi Knight Reath Silas & Padawan Amadeo Azzazzo as they continue to search through the Jedi Archives for the history of the Echo Stones. The echo stones will eventually (they hope) lead to the Rod of Ages. This could help the Jedi in their fight against the Nameless Creatures used by the Nihil. Will they make any headway in their search, or will they get lost further down the path? Let’s jump into it and find out!

Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Echoes of Fear #3 by George Mann (writer), Vincenzo Federici, Giorgia Sposito (illustrators), Michael Atiyeh & Francesco Segala (color), Comicraft’s Tyler Smith & Jimmy Betancourt (letters) & Eduardo Mello & Valentina Taddeo (cover) is more of the same as seen in the previous two issues. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does feel like things are starting to drag on a little too long.

The story again focuses on Silas & Azzazzo as they continue their search in the Jedi Archives for more information. This will hopefully lead to the discovery of the whereabouts of the Rod of Ages. They been following the path of Barnabas Vim, but that’s lead them to a dead end.

They end up receiving help from another Jedi Master named Cohmac. Cohmac learned about their search from none other than Vernestra Rwoh (yes, that Vernestra from The Acolyte). He suggests that “his story doesn’t end where you think it does.” That leads them to learning about Atticus Cale & his Padwan Jadia Brink on one of their trips into the galaxy to find Vim.

The story is simple enough, but it feels like more of the same. Which again isn’t a bad thing, but the overall story just feels like it hasn’t gotten going yet. It kind of feels like the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring, and just how long it is before you get to chapter one. There is a payoff at the end, and hopefully with this payoff things will finally start to pick up. But for now, it’s hard to get into the story with so much backstory filled in.

FINAL POINT: The story has been decent enough that it’s enjoyable but if you haven’t kept up with it to this point, you may want to wait until issue 4 comes out and then catch up all at once. The amount of backstory isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but three issues worth feels a little much to me. Regardless, the next issue should be interesting in revealing if this series is going to go anywhere or just continue to spin it’s tires in place.

SCORE: 7 out of 10
