Terminator #2:
Saigon is falling as the Vietnam War draws to an end, and the Americans are hauling tail out of harm’s way. Edward Duggan is one of the soldiers on the next chopper to freedom, but he has buried something of value in the jungle that he must get back. The Communists aren’t the only ones after Duggan, though, as another Terminator has arrived with one goal in mind: kill Edward Duggan.
Creative Team:
Writer and Cover Artist: Declan Shalvey
Art: David O’Sullivan
Colors: Colin Craker
Letters: Jeff Eckelberry
The Story:
I enjoy that Declan is showcasing the pure horror and destruction that Terminators can cause. He continues this in this issue, and we get to go into the machine a bit to see just how they calculate their destruction, whether they throw or shoot. Declan hooks us with needing to know what it is that Edward has buried that is so important which sets our hearts racing as he comes upon the Terminator in the middle of destroying the enemy.
I will say this issue ends far too soon. However, it hooked me enough that I am bought into this story and why the machines are so bent on jumping through time.
The Artwork:
David and Colin capture the essence of 1970’s Vietnam in a way that you can almost feel the humidity and bugs swarming us as we read the issue. The thick greenery mixed with the destruction being brought on by the Terminator makes for outstanding visuals. One of the highlights is seeing a partially destroyed Terminator with a part machine showing beneath its skin, which has always been a favorite of mine.
Overall:
Terminator #2 continues to capture its audience by giving an unstoppable killing machine meeting humans who are no match. I do wish this issue gave us a little more as it feels as though it ends abruptly, but that keeps me coming back for issue #3 as I am overall enjoying the series!
