For the first time ever The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen and The Witch of Lotkill team up. From Writer Steve Orlando, Artists Lorenzo Tammetta, Colorist Frank William & letterer Travis Lanham.
Be sure to catch up with Scarlet Witch #4!
Ancient Evil is on the loose!
After defeating the Griever at the end of all things, a feat that required Wanda to die and descend to the land of witches. To later face Lore and pass the land of the dead. Finally achieving resurrection with the help of her sworn enemy the Hexfinder, The Scarlet Witch realized her troubles were not yet over. Chthon had escaped his imprisonment. (As seen in Scarlet Witch no. 3 & 4 by Steve Orlando 2024)
Trap Doors
If this wasn’t troublesome enough, when Hexfinder “fixed” The Last Door, she left a parting gift for Wanda. The Door’s malfunction was previously noted by the Scarlet Witch in the Crypt of Shadows #1 (2024) issue. Now, the Last Door works both ways, people looking for help can find the Scarlet Witch when passing through the door or Wanda can go through the door and find those in need of help.
The Bricklayer is back!
In issue no.5 we have the return of an old foe of Wanda, from the Crypt Shadows #1 (2023), The Bricklayer. The Scarlet Witch had defeated this spawn of Chthon in their last encounter. But The Bricklayer managed to reform and make comeback. The news of Chthon’s escaped have traveled far and wide. The Bricklayer has decided to raise hell in honor of its master.
Minor Spoilers for Scarlet Witch no.5
This review is a joint review by Yancy (YeartheColector) and Megan Nichole, both avid comic nerds and comic reviewers for Nerd Initiative!
An eerie match!
Yancy: Because of this, the Man Without Fear and the Scarlet Witch team up to save the people of Hell’s Kitchen from the rampage ensued by this Spawn of Chthon. Daredevil proves to be a suitable partner for the Witch. The Supernatural does not face him. After all he is the man without fear. His sonar abilities are very useful even against this paranormal enemy. Due to the demonic nature of The Bricklayer, Daredevil’s Catholic practices and devotion come in handy when fighting people possessed.
Don’t know Latin? Do not worry!
Daredevil cites an exorcism prayer in Latin to release the victims from their possession. I had to look it up, as someone who was raised catholic myself it spiked my curiosity. It’s a legit exorcism prayer. Nice job there by the writer and/or editors.
Uninvited guest, again!
The issue ends with a great lesson, which is there are no shortcuts in learning. Finally, Lady Harkness makes her appearances as foreshadowed in the Crypt of Shadows #1 (2024). This is mere speculation on my behalf, but I believe Agatha Harkness is looking to have the Scarlet Witch become Amaranth’s teacher.
Megan: Another fantastic addition to Steve Orlando’s Scarlet Witch run. Daredevil and Scarlet Witch are a dream team made in Heaven! They work so well together when they’re from the opposite sides of the spectrum in heroes. With both of them bringing in their own expertise to take down this particular villain, they meshed together perfectly as a team.
Something I appreciate is how much lore Orlando brings into the Scarlet Witch run from the past comics. It’s an exciting read when you get to learn about these ancient relics from Wanda while learning that Daredevil is able to exorcise the demons out of the civilians.
How about the Art?
Yancy: The Scarlet Witch has been blessed with amazing artists and issue no.5 is no exception. Lorenzo Tammetta showcased all types of skills with this one episode. Scarlet Witch’s magical constructs and hex’s are quite detailed and depicted strongly. Daredevil is drawn very agile, virtuoso, poised and in control. Very unafraid if you will. The coloring by Frank William continues to bring all these crazy ideas and magical chaos to life with his color palette. There’s something so aesthetically appealing about the Scarlet Witch’s magical cape or cloak, I can’t help but follow its flow with my eyes in every single panel.
Megan: The artists of the Scarlet Witch run are absolutely flexing their skills. With the incredible abstract demonstrations of Wanda’s chaos magic paired with the beautiful colors, it’s a feast for the eyes. Each page gets more beautiful than the last, making you excited to read what’s next. The talents of the creative team only elevate the already fantastic story.
Something I’d like to point out is how great Daredevil and Wanda looked together. Daredevil looked exactly how any fan would want him to, with his superior fighting skills that jump out of the page. But him matched with Wanda’s larger than life powers makes Scarlet Witch #5 an absolute joy to read.
Yancy – 9 out of 10
I can’t believe it took 60 years for the Devil and the Witch to finally team up in a comic book! Shoutout to Steve Orlando! This current era of the Witch it’s just perfect! Never seen this character treated with such respect, such dignity and reverence than these last few years. Steve Orlando deserves many praises in my opinion! I highly recommend you get caught up with The Scarlet Witch if you haven’t done so yet. You are missing out!
Megan – 10 out of 10
After reading Scarlet Witch #5, I am obsessed with Daredevil and Wanda working together. I really hope we get to see more of them working side by side. Also, seeing Agatha Harkness show up at the end makes me ecstatic to see what’s next for the Scarlet Witch.
