Creative Team – Tim Avers & Paul Fricke

“From the glittering glamor of Los Angeles to the cold, unforgiving Gulf of Finland, the worlds of high fashion and international crime collide in Blood Orange: National Secrets.”
Blood Orange: National Secrets takes you into the world of the the rich and high fashion with Cat Henley, AKA Constanze, as your lead. Cat is a model, an actress, a certified platinum recording artist, but that may just be the start of who she is. This comic is surrounded in mystery and does a fantastic job at keeping you hooked onto every word to find out more.
While Cat is taking the world by storm, we get another storyline that’s dripping in espionage that somehow connects to our main character. So far, we see that they have one thing in common, the i0. The i0 seems to be a high fashion couture that connects the fashion world to the international crime groups to each other. The importance the i0 has on the Blood Orange world is evident and mystifying, as you wouldn’t normally correlate the two, but that’s what so interesting about this book. The creative team, Tim Avers and Paul Fricke, excel in making you see the underlying connection while being entertained by the surface.
The writing of Blood Orange: National Secrets #1 is nothing less than excellent. The creative team goes above and beyond to surround the story in mystery while making you feel apart of their world. I think that’s what makes it so compelling because you just want to keep digging and find all the secrets of the story and their characters.
Throughout the book, you get to know Cat Henley, but the more you learn about her, the more you realize that she is a mystery. In the end, you’re left with so many questions that you just can’t wait to find out the answers to. Who does Cat work for? Is she more than just a high-fashioned super star? Why do the Russians want i0’s entire catalogue? And who is Cat texting?!
The art of Blood Orange: National Secrets #1 perfectly fits the vibe of the story and makes you realize how complex the book truly is. With its change from the bright and easy colors of Cat’s world to the dark and grittiness of the crime world, its shift in tones is handled masterfully. In Cat’s world of fame and fortune, the artists creatively illustrate how modern her life really is with the use of a social media post here and there or a look at Cat’s mysterious texts messages.
Overall, I think Blood Orange: National Secrets #1 waas a home run. I was left excited and intrigued. I’m very interested to see what’s in the future for Cat and the i0, and how she’s involved in the world of crime.
I give this a 10 out of 10
