Be sure to catch up with Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #5!
The excitement was real for Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #6, so this review was written by Nerd Initiative’s comic reviewer, Kat, joined by Nerd Initiative Brand Advisor/Ast. Editor, Megan Nichole!
Looking for trouble in a bar
With Chameleon gone, Gwen is on to her next target: Black Tarantula. But finding him will be easier said than done. And going to a bar to find him is even harder than you would expect. After the events with Chameleon, no one trusts Ghost-Spider now.
And then, what looks to be drunk decides to try to pick a fight with Gwen. Before he can try anything, Gwen smacks him upside the head. Before a fight can fully break out, a mysterious new ally walks in and we learn it’s Jessica Jones. But, the comic then cuts back to a few hours before. We see Gwen at a cafe, on her computer, looking up information on Black Tarantula.
A Familiar Face
While Gwen is doing her research, she’s interrupted by a familiar face, the stranger she met before named Fabian. Turns out after their last encounter in the coffee shop, Fabian went searching for Gwen to make sure she was okay after the villainous attack she endured. Gwen, ever so graceful, scores Fabian’s phone number after he tells her to call for a coffee date when she’s ready. After that encounter, we cut back to Gwen in the bar. And now, a fight breaks out with the drunk guy. And that’s when Gwen suits up into the Ghost-Spider.
New Alliance!
We proceed to see Gwen and Jessica join forces to fight off the people in the bar, and they get webbed to the walls of the joint while sporting their new bruises. After Jessica and Gwen leave to go get some pizza, we see one of the guys calling his boss to talk about Gwen and Jessica. We then see a whole moment in what looks like a fight pit that certainly clears up who the real villains are here.
We then cut back to Gwen and Jessica in Jessica’s office having a conversation that’s a tough one for Gwen but so very needed. Gwen finally has a friend in this new world! After that we see Gwen return to her apartment, and she finds a gift and note left by Black Tarantula.
The Art
Kat: There’s nothing that compares to Paolo Villanelli’s art. He is continuing to knock this new Gwen comic out of the park. And his art also makes the story look incredible.
Megan: The artwork in Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider #6 just gets better and better with each new comic! I love the grittiness of the panels juxtaposed with the fantastic coloring on the pages with Gwen in her suit. This was such a joy to read and the artwork is a big factor in that.
The Writing
Kat: Stephanie Phillips has just continued to show why her writing is amazing. She is writing Gwen so, so well. And it shows throughout this issue.
10 out of 10
Megan: Another banger of a comic from Stephanie Phillips! I couldn’t love this one any more than I already do. Seeing Gwen lean into being the Ghost-Spider and flirting with the idea of being an antihero, despite it not being the Spider-Hero way was really refreshing to see for her character. Also seeing her finally have a support system in Jessica Jones was really comforting to see. I’m so excited to see what comes from these two characters in the future.
10 out of 10
Kat: I am convinced that this comic will continue to be amazing as the issues continue. It will be interesting to see if Jessica Jones reappears for more adventures with Gwen.
