***Minor Spoilers Possible***

“Mukbang”

The first ghoulish tale is Mukbang. Written by Michael W. Conrad, illustrated by Martìn Morazzo, colors by Chris O’Halloran, and letters by Lucas Gattoni.

Two high school kids get in a game of one upmanship in the online video content creation of mukbang videos. As they compete, they get more and more disturbed in what they eat. How far will they go to win this war of food?

Everything about this story is works. The premise takes the real world of making internet content and shines a disturbing light on it. The art leaves nothing to the imagination. After reading this one you’re going to need a shower.

“S.I.K.T.C: A Monster Hunter Walks Into a Bar Part Two”

Next up is the second part of the S.I.K.T.C short story. Written by James Tynion IV, illustrated by Werther Dell’edera, colors by Miquel Muerto, and letters by Andworld Design.

Part two of the story picks up where we left off in part one. Erica Slaughter sits at the bar as the bartender points her in the direction of a local man who saw something terrifying. After seeing the gruesome scene this man has developed a drinking problem. Erica would like to hear from others.

This is a good continuation of the short story. Much like the main run story of S.I.K.T.C, this tale is intriguing and gets a little gory. Even though we aren’t at the ramp up portion of the story yet, it’s teasing us for what’s to come.

“Kampfgeist”

Third on this terror ride is Kampfgeist. Written by Andy Lanning, illustrated by Trevor Hairsine, colors by Rain Beredo, and letters by Ed Dukeshire.

It’s 1917 and in the trenches of World War 1 the horrors of war are all too familiar. In an attempt to take out the enemy for good, the allies dig a tunnel to line with explosives under the German side. Unfortunately for the soldiers there is something more terrifying awaiting them then the Germans.

Although this was my least favorite story in this issue it still had some good spots. The art is fantastic and really gives you the feel of war. Where this tale falls short in my opinion is that it’s too predictable and anticlimactic.

“The War Part Three”

In the final slot of the issue is The War Part Three. This tale is written by Garth Ennis, illustrated by Becky Cloonan, colors by Tamra Bonvillain, and letters by Pat Brosseau.

We join our group of friends we have been following who splintered off from each other in Part Two. Now we follow them as they are trying to escape New York separately without letting each other know. Just when it appears that the slow burn will continue, New York is finally attacked, and The War has hit home. What will become of the characters we’ve grown to love.

This story has been doing an awesome job of building tension and giving us that horror slow burn. Even though it gets kicked up a notch in this part, it’s definitely far from where we will end up. This story has kept me engaged and the only negative is waiting until next month to read the next part.

Final Thoughts

This book has become one of my must reads every month. Every month finding ways to keep us readers engaged. I almost forgot to mention my favorite part of each issue, Robert Hack’s 1 panel stories. The absolute best pallet cleanser in the genre today. This book should be a no brainer on your Pull List.

Final Grade: 9/10
