Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the latest issue of Ultimate Spider-Man from Jonathan Hickman & Marvel!

This issue is another fantastic issue from Jonathan Hickman and the entire crew. There isn’t a whole lot that goes on action wise, but it does further build up this new Ultimate universe.

It also further bring things to the climax that we know they’re building to, the return of The Maker. But just where do things stand? Let’s jump in and find out!

MORE SPIDER-MAN!

Ultimate Spider-Man #8 by Jonathan Hickman (writer), Marco Checchetto (artist), Matthew Wilson (color artist), VC’s Cory Petit (letterer), Marco Checchetto & Matthew Wilson (cover artists) weaves it’s story brilliantly between many characters, with Peter Parker remains the central focus for most of the issue.

From the suspicious conversation he has at the beginning, to Peter and Harry’s conversation with Tony Stark, a birthday party and Wilson Fisk working his magic, it’s an incredible issue from start to finish. Hickman is truly weaving an incredible story that is multi-layered and has so many moving chess pieces.

Of particular interest is the conversation between Peter, Harry and Tony Stark. Essentially it’s Tony telling Peter that the Maker is going to return in a little over a year, and to get himself ready. But that’s not the interesting part.

The interesting part is when Harry asks Tony where he falls on the “list”. The list is of course the Maker’s list of people who had to be “removed” from history, and Peter was at the top of the list. Tony tells Harry that, “You weren’t on it. At all.” This might seem like nothing right now, but given how Harry’s history usually turns out it could come back to haunt them later.

SPOILERS AHEAD

My favorite part of the issue is at the end with Wilson Fisk, where he brings together seemingly the first 4 (or 5 if you count Fisk himself) members of what appear to be this universes Sinister Six. And to see the list of folks he’s brought on board is very interesting.

The list is: Martin Li (aka Mr. Negative), Walter Hardy (aka the Black Cat), Kraven, and Mysterio. Of course as the Black Cat points out, they’re one short. And all Fisk replies is “He doesn’t use the front door.” So who exactly that means is anybody’s guess, but I’m VERY intrigued to see who it’s going to be

END OF SPOILERS

FINAL POINT: Hickman & the entire creative team are really telling a masterpiece of a story that is already shaping up to be one of the most memorable runs in Spider-Man history. The slow build Hickman is doing has been perfectly laid out so far, and other than the Maker returning in the future (which I think we all expected to happen without it being expressly said) it’s hard to tell where things are going to be going in the immediate future. But that’s half the fun with the series.

It’s taking characters we’ve known for so long, and not presenting them in a way that we’ve seen before. This issue along with the whole series should be at the top of everyone’s must read list. It’s still early in the series, so it won’t take long for you to catch up if you haven’t started yet.

SCORE: 9.3 out of 10
