What’s Up Ghouls!? Rich is back to give you a horror anthology review! This time I’m checking out the latest EC Comics/Oni Press release Epitaphs from the Abyss #2. Let’s enter the cemetery and see what horrors we can find.

Fresh Meat

The Grave-Digger opens the book as only he can. He tells us we have 3 “delectable” tales and even brought his “family” to work.

The first story up is Pattern Recognition, written by Matt Kindt and art by Klaus Janson. This is a tale about a racist group led by Johnny. One night a member of his group is almost killed when a nail goes through his skull. The gang member then gets the ability to hear Johnny in his head. But you know the world would be better if everyone could hear Johnny.

The second tale is Grey Green Memories, written and art by Tyler Crook. In this macabre tale, we join a zombie lady who is staring at a shelf in a store. As she stares, she can’t help but think she’s forgetting something important. A mom and daughter show up and add a twist into the equation.

Finally, we get to Sounds & Haptics, written by Jason Aaron and art by Jorge Fornès. A young man awakens in a hospital bed to the sounds of his cell phone. He finds out he was in a bad accident where people died. He constantly hears the ping of the phone and keeps losing body parts due to infection. As he tries to remember the accident, he learns that there is more to this hospital and his situation.

Terror Trilogy

Epitaphs from the Abyss #2 is a horror filled ride with many twists and turns. Every story has a different tone and vibe. In anthologies it’s easy to be repetitive, but this issue does not fall into that trap.

Pattern Recognition has shadowy art that brings out the dark story. Meanwhile, Sounds & Haptics feels like a throw back to the golden era of EC Comics with its art. Kudos to Klaus Janson, Tyler Crook, and Jorge Fornès for the great artwork.

Overall, this book was thoroughly enjoyable. The flow from story to story was impeccable. If you enjoy horror anthology comics this will be a book that will slot in perfectly on your pull list.
