The Start of the War

The Venom Wars have started as Eddie Brock and his son Dylan are at war. Both father and son want the symbiote so the other can’t have it. Venom, who left them both behind due to it’s thinking that he’s ruined both of their lives, finds himself hiding in Peter Parker’s closet awaiting his death. Peter finds Venom in his closet and doesn’t necessarily bond with him, but joins forces. Peter makes it clear that they’re two separate minds working together rather than Venom taking him on as a host.

Once they’re connected, they head off to the battle arena where Eddie and Dylan are facing off. But of course, in true Spider-Man fashion, he’s stopped by his own villain, the Hobgoblin. And not just one, but many of them. The Hobgoblin has formed a full herd of Hobgoblins to take down Spider-Man.

Something I really liked was seeing Venom and Spider-Man work as two separate beings, rather than one bond unit. Peter is his usual hopeful and kind self, which is something Venom loved about him, dubbing him “Saint Peter” when he first bonded with him. Another thing I loved was the assist Spider-Man got from a fellow hero whilst trying to take down the army of Hobgoblins. This comic had so much action, but also so much heart through and through.

The Art

Admittedly, I’ll never get tired of seeing Spider-Man in the black suit. It’s always been one of my favorite looks and I think it was drawn and detailed fantastically. The details of the lighting, making the suit look even more sleek than usual, were pitch perfect. Something else I really enjoyed was how you could see Peter’s red Spidey suit under the Venom suit, which showed when he got attacked by the Hobgoblin. I liked how you could see Venom attempted to work to cover it back up. It was done creatively and deserves mention, I think.

The artwork throughout Venom Wars: Spider-Man #1 was done in such a great way, it was enthralling to see throughout the comic. Every panel had a brilliant juxtaposition of colors with an impressive amount of detail.

The Writing

Personally, I loved everything about this comic. It felt like an old school Spider-Man story, along with new modernized aspects such as a certain new hero assisting Peter and Venom. I really loved the dialogue between Venom and Peter, showing how truly different they are and why Peter is right in not wanting to bond with Venom. The Venom War event has been excitement after excitement and this comic was no different. I look forward to seeing what’s next!

I give this a 10 out of 10
