MORE NEW COMICS FROM THIS WEEK!
This review is a joint review written by Chris, the Long Box Punk and Megan of the Vigilante Vibes: Marvel Podcast, both avid comic fans and reviewers of Nerd Initiative.
Into the Unknown
Midst: Address Unknown follows sibling duo Rowan and Ogden as they crash land in an unfamiliar isle that straddles both the Un and the Fold. As they meet new comrades, they establish a town on the isle and begin to flourish and grow. But is the bright and sunny Un enough to keep away the monsters that dwell in the Fold? Will the strain of settling on this isle take it’s toll on the sibling duo and their new neighbors?
Themes of family, friendship, and aspirations abound as the creative team spin a magical tale set in a world that both feels new and exciting and yet somehow also familiar and not too far away. This issue has something for both familiar fans, and new fans alike.
The Art
Megan – I really loved the artwork! The bright colors juxtaposed with the more normal looking scenes made it feel like a fantasy-space-cowboy kind of vibe. My favorite parts of the comic is when the earthquake happened and the Fold took over their new town. The dark purple and blue gave it a nice eerie feeling that fit perfectly with the monsters of the Fold.
Chris – The color palette for both sides of the aisle in the Midst was very well done. I loved how complimentary, and also vividly contrasting the Un and the Fold were once we saw both sides of the world. The science felt believable while also feeling completely otherworldly.
The Writing
Megan – The mystery surrounding this whole story hit so many notes for me. I was constantly guessing what was going to happen while sitting on the edge of my seat. My only issue is that I wish there was more context provided in certain situations, like the backstories of the characters and where they’re from. I’m hoping the next installments give more information on those things. Other than that, I found it very compelling throughout Midst: Address Unknown #1.
Chris – The writing of Midst felt so realistic. As a brother, with a sister, the back and forth between Ogden and Rowan. The need to find a comfortable location from Ogden came through loud and clear and really added to his character and story. I felt like the first two acts of the book had a calm that completely got flipped once the Fold took hold. There was an excellent balance between the calm and bright Un, and the dark and horrific Fold.
Final Thoughts
Megan – Overall, I found Midst: Address Unknown #1 to be really interesting and a fun read. I can’t wait to follow along and learn more about this new world!
8.3 out of 10
Chris – Grade for me would be probably a 7.5 out of 10 because of the no prior knowledge/confusion
But it was for sure a fun read regardless and has me hungry to find out more of what I’ve been missing. I really enjoyed this book, but felt like I would have enjoyed it more had I known more of the world they were playing in.
7.5 out of 10
