Spider-Man Black Suit & Blood #1:

Marvel is all about the untold stories these days. We have the Green Goblin getting a new historical makeover and now, we have Spider-Man Black Suit and Blood, where we learn about some stories dating back to when Peter was wearing the symbiote suit that eventually becomes the anti-hero we know and love – VENOM!

Issue #1 includes four stories in all and the cover art is enough to make you pull the trigger on this gritty Spidey tale!

The Art:

I mean … come on! The cover is a 90’s kid’s dream. Attitude, blood, violence and Spider-Man.

Then you move on to stories like “Losing Face” and the art changes with the story and the artist. But it works and this issue has the art planned out masterfully.

Losing Face feels like something out of Sin City or a crime noir, while Inside the House has more of a Bill Sienkiewicz feel to it.

The book may feel a little disjointed at times because of the different stories, but the art is truly a highlight and a showcase.

The Writing:

The stories are all a little different and may be something of a one-off.

Losing Face is a heartwarming tale that I think was put together incredibly well, while Inside the House lacked a little depth.

Dysmorphia is much of the same as a look inside the mind and inner fight Peter had with the symbiote. The art on Dysmorphia though … chef’s kiss. I need me some of that original art!

We close with Fade to Black (epic title). Probably the best story in the issue, with a surprising twist at the end.

Overall: 8/10

The art alone here gives this book a 10! It’s the best and most unique art I’ve seen in quite a while.

The stories feel a bit disjointed, but have promise.

Fade to Black has the makings of a classic story that any Venom fan will love.

I’m excited to see what they do next with the anthology of sorts!

We … are … Venom.
