Quoting the opening page: “Astronauts Ramon, Glenn, Addison, and Buckley were the four-man crew for a mission to the moon-but something went wrong, and an encounter with a cosmic force left Ramon with powers beyond his understanding.
Back home in Cleveland, Ramon tested his new powers over the city’s rooftops, ending in a violent confrontation with Janus enforcers. Coming home, his brother Micah gave him the news Glenn is dead.” -Higgins/Mescudi
The Art:
This issue starts with a somber tone, and the artistic style of drawing the characters and the use of flat colors excellently match the vibe and tone it sets out to accomplish. So much is emotionally spoken through our characters, not with words but with their eyes and facial expressions. Some may consider the drawing not as detailed yet; on the contrary, there is so much detail, and it all begins with the eyes and setting the tone there.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
The visual pallet does not stop there as Igor and Marco showcase different arenas within this issue. The level of detail input crafting a serene starry night that blends with flashes of orange and yellow as the sun begins to rise is one example. As the issue goes onward the team showcase the use of powers through bright colors and again, it all starts with Ramon’s eyes as it is pouring yellow and flashing with anger at what Janus is attempting to bring him in to do. The art was a strong suit in this issue and so much was crafted and told within the panels that this story continues to get stronger with each issue.
The Writing:
Higgins and Cudi hammer down the tone to compliment what is told through the art. When Ramon and Janelle first meet again and spend the evening in the woods, you can almost hear the tenderness in their voices. Hassan backs them up with his lettering, working to draft Ramon’s softness and hesitation.
This issue starts as a grieving period for Ramon and as confusion for Micah, but through their storytelling, Higgins and Cudi recreate a lost relationship and then slowly draw upon the impending “villain” as they showcase the other powers in Addison and slowly unravel their plan.
It’s a work of art and a wonderfully well done manner of making us care about these characters and not tipping their hand too much too fast opting to give the reader a little bit at a time to build suspense.
Overall:
Moon Man #3 builds upon the first two issues and develops characters we fall in love with within a story that has action, loss, love, and a shroud of mystery all in its pages. The team has created a pressure cooker that is slowly gaining steam and will sure soon come to a head in. what I expect will be epic fashion.
