DON’T MISS THE TOP 10!
Kill All Immortals brings us Erik the Red and his family of immortal Vikings in a blood-soaked story full of violence, action, and mystery. Erik’s daughter, Frey Asvald has gone against the family and their supernatural secrets threaten to be exposed. Get ready for a fight unlike any other!
The Art:
I have never wondered what Vikings would look like in a modern-day world, but if I had to, I would say Fico and Thiago perfectly capture the imposing stature of the Asvald family. The way they honor tradition within their hair striking the resemblance of a time long lost whilst putting them in suits that would make John Wick jealous, the duo capture the characters in an imposing manner anytime they are on the page.
In terms of the action, they do a stunning job bringing to life the brutal and violent action with detailed killings. This issue is not for the easily squeamish, as they create clever ways to utilize ancient axes to take out enemies. One specific panel sees one of the brother’s axes bursting from the page as though this comic is coming to life in a 3-D manner. Fico and Thiago make the most of their spacing and bring to life the violent fighting we expected in a story of Vikings. Characters aside, the level of eye-popping colors and detail when we travel to various lands leaves the reader taking their time to admire every panel to fully soak in this story.
The Writing:
Zack stuns us with his ability to create a multi-faceted story in this stunning opening issue. Kicking it off with the brothers out to destroy their enemies and then showcasing Frey, who is not like the brothers, then switching gears to show that beneath her will to do good in the world, she is just as brutal when it is called for. The storytelling brings us a mountain of intrigue and leaves us with a kick-ass female action lead that has the potential to find herself in the same breath as Lara Croft.
Hassan as well continues the championship year he has been having lettering some of the best books we have gotten this year. Bringing to life emotions and sounds is not an easy task but, Hassan continues to show us why his name should be in awards consideration at years end.
Overall:
Dark Horse Comics has been building the hype for Kill All Immortals, and it delivers in a jaw-dropping brutal fashion. Wrought with intense action sequences and suspenseful character-driven moments, this first issue masterfully announces itself onto the scene. Make sure this finds its way to the top of your pull pile as it is can’t miss entertainment.
10/10 Cigars.
