House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 1 Review: A Son For A Son

Off the heels of season one, House of the Dragon left off with Rhaenerya (Emma D’arcy) is in a time of grief. After the news of her son, her next move needed to be swift. In the beginning of the season’s episode, there is a narration explaining the Night’s Watch. It had me thinking of the Starks from the acclaimed Game of Thrones, and how Jon Snow felt about the Night’s Watch. Queen Rhaenerya’s son Jacaerys (Harry Collett) goes to make sure that the alliance with the North and Lord Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor) still remains. It is heartbreaking when he returns, he runs into Rhaenrya’s arms and they have a moment of grief.

Daemon has his own ideas, trying to recruit Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) to fly with him to kill Vhagar and Aemond. Daemon says those chilling words, “A Son For A Son.” In a different scene, Lord Corlys (Steve Toussaint) is talking to Alyn about the navy and their fleet of ships. This is the introduction to Alyn, and Lord Corlys says that he is in debt to him (I’m thinking this will play out later in the series).

There is a scene where Alicent is lighting candles for ones that have passed.  Alicent even lights one for Lucerys, but seems to not speak his name. Rhaenrya and her family finally have the funeral. One by one, they are burning the items left of Lucerys. They even have his little brother who threw in something into the fire.

While this is happening, Daemon is on his way to see a previous lover and someone who has information,  Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno). She is in prison and Daemon makes a deal with her. Having connections in the palace he will see to it to place a bounty on Aemond and have him killed. Daemon also sets up two hit men who are named Blood (Sam C. Wilson) and Cheese (Mark Stobbard).

Aegon is not where they thought he was, so they made a decision to kill one of his sons. The problem is they can’t tell the difference between the twins. One of them, holding Haelena with a knife, asked which one is the son. Haelena has to make the ultimate choice, and pointed to the boy. Blood and Cheese proceed to kill that twin. Haelena ran with the twin girl to Queen Alicent’s quarters. Ser Cristen Cole and Alicent were being intimate, and the abruptly stopped. Alicent asked what happened and Haelena said, “They killed the boy”.

This first episode comes in heavy, and I can’t wait to see what happens next week. What will Aegon do due to Daemon’s actions? This is the tipping of an iceberg, that will keep on happening during this season.

You can watch House of the Dragon, Sundays at 9 P.M. on HBO and on MAX.
